FOX // BBC // KMOX // WIJRJune 21, 2023 at 9:10 pm #225270Hopefully the Redbirds will travel to the UK to win a couple of baseball games and take a pass on tea and scones with the queen.
June 22, 2023 at 5:20 am #225277I imagined that perhaps the Brits would reciprocate by sending a couple of their cricket teams to play at Busch. That got me thinking, I hope the fans who show up to the game in London know more about baseball than I know about cricket. Wishing to not be in the dark, I pulled up a glossary of cricket terms to have a look. Here is the first entry:
Across the line
A shot which is played with the bat moving lateral to the direction of motion of the ball. Used when the batsman is aiming square or behind square, but requires excellent timing. Considered risky, as mistiming the shot can result in a leading edge, being strangled, or missing the ball entirely and being out bowled or leg before wicket. So, now I am wondering if baseball terminology reads like that to them.
June 22, 2023 at 6:17 am #225279So, wondering if baseball terminology reads like that to them.
With terms like “suicide squeeze”, “sacrifice fly”, “wounded duck”, “ducks on a pond”, “chin music”, “around the horn”, “circus catch”, “frozen rope”, “cutoff man”, “beanball”, “excuse me swing”, “can of corn”, “pickle”, “high cheese” and “gopher ball”, I think it’s pretty safe to say that the Brits will/are a bit bamboozled and amused with our game, Blingster.
June 22, 2023 at 8:42 am #225286Agreed Pugs. And if the announcer mentions a two bagger I hope it is not taken as disparagement of a lady in attendance.
June 22, 2023 at 9:44 am #225288==Hopefully the Redbirds will travel to the UK to win a couple of baseball games and take a pass on tea and scones with the queen.==
She’s dead. So tea is more than likely out of the question.
June 22, 2023 at 9:46 am #225289And that lazy flyball would probably be a tin of maize.
June 22, 2023 at 10:06 am #225290As your president said the other day…..”God Save The Queen!”
June 22, 2023 at 10:36 am #225294Her highness is dead? If that’s indeed the case, is the king in charge of things now? Is he even a baseball fan? If so, perhaps he’ll donate that fancy imperial crown to the next TC Winner. You know, as a diplomatic gift.
June 22, 2023 at 11:01 am #225297Our President said that? Is his lovely and highly exalted queen in some sort of danger? Is so, let’s hope the secret service can rescue her from peril before gas prices go up…
June 22, 2023 at 11:02 am #225298I think King Charles is more into Polo if I recall correctly.
I’d like to see him throw out the first pitch, lol – could get interesting….
I hope the lads enjoy the trip as many of them may not have ever been overseas before.
June 22, 2023 at 11:08 am #225299Can you drink the water there? I don’t go anywhere you can’t drink the water.
June 22, 2023 at 11:19 am #225300If the queen’s indeed dead, I’m reasonably certain the quality of the water supply in her vast empire has been compromised with the end of her majesty’s absolute authority.
June 22, 2023 at 11:40 am #225301Those Pirates have now lost 9 in row to outpace the Cardinals for the longest losing streak in the NLC this season.
June 22, 2023 at 11:57 am #22530295% of the Brits are into football, which we call soccer. I have attended a match over there in Manchester. Let’s just say it was intense. They take it seriously.
June 22, 2023 at 2:18 pm #225305I’m assuming London Stadium doesn’t have dugouts or bullpens. I wonder what the wall will consist of and the dimensions. How much foul ground. Infield quality? Is it turf or carpet with sliding pits? They know about the batter’s eye in center presumably.i guess MLB looked into all that.
June 22, 2023 at 5:32 pm #225307I just looked it up, Bling, and saw a photo of the venue set up for baseball. The caption for the photo claimed it was the London series. It looked like a ballpark to me. I’m sure they’ll figure it out for the Cardinals/Cubs. It’s about dinner time and I was more focused on the concessions. I couldn’t find any photos or info on the hot dogs.
June 22, 2023 at 6:24 pm #225308Big series starting tomorrow night at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. The Braves come to town for a three game series.
Atlanta has won eight (8) in a row.
Cincinnati has won eleven (11) in a row.Let’s hope for a Braves sweep which will start a big tailspin for the Reds. The Pirates have lost nine (9) in a row. I believe the Cubs have won eight of nine coming into the London series.

June 22, 2023 at 9:25 pm #225310Speaking of the out-of-town scoreboard:
The Pirates lost their 10th straight game tonight. 6-4 Miami the final down in South Florida.
We need the Reds, Brewers, and Cubs to follow suit with big losing streaks.

June 22, 2023 at 9:40 pm #225311Yep, and Arraez goes 1 for 3 and plummets to a paltry .397 BA. Maybe Skippy should sit him a game or two.
June 22, 2023 at 9:47 pm #225312I’ve noticed that the local media outlets here in the StL. area seem to be substantially more focused on the travel plans that the two baseball games.
June 23, 2023 at 5:18 am #225318As to Arraez, can one of the stats hounds around here give us a report on his avg exit velocity, launch angle and barrel rate? Also, does he spray it to all fields or pull everything?
I notice Arraez has a paltry 2 HRs. If he had come up through our system, by now he’d either be just another guy trying and mostly failing to hit homers or he’d be moved out or washed out. Its a one size fits all approach to developing hitters, just ask Donovan. Thankfully, Donnie seems to be shaking it off and becoming good at what he’s good at again.
June 23, 2023 at 9:29 am #225323This series has “SPLIT” written all over it. Neither of these teams traversed the Big Pond to get swept. Let’s call a spade a spade here…..the cub pitching, especially their starting pitching, is presently so much better than our’s. If we had the cub pitching staff here in 2023, we would be 10-15 games over .500 heading into this series. Our Birds however, own the better hitters and defenders, though Chicago is no slouch with the leather, especially up the middle. Some may want to compare the coaching staffs, but we’ll leave that for another day. Even though it’s not a game day, that alone should not dissuade anyone from revealing what’s on tap in the din-din department tonight. It’s Friday, so we all know Rat is heading out to his restaurant on the lake where he’ll dine on chicken, beef brisket, catfish fiddlers, mashed potatoes, noodles, green beans, clam chowder, cherry cobbler and a heaping dish of vanilla bean ice cream smothered in Hershey’s chocolate syrup. I’m heading out to a supper club (Fish Tales) out on Lake Wisconsin, where I’ll indulge in their fried cod, crab legs and their wonderful homemade bread. No dessert is in the cards tonight as ole’ Pugsaronias is looking to shave off a lb. or two.
June 23, 2023 at 9:38 am #225324I’m assuming London Stadium doesn’t have dugouts or bullpens. I wonder what the wall will consist of and the dimensions. How much foul ground. Infield quality? Is it turf or carpet with sliding pits? They know about the batter’s eye in center presumably.i guess MLB looked into all that.
The Yankees and Red Sox played there in 2019. The biggest problem was that the OF dimensions were way too small. The Yankees won the first game 17-13 and the second game 12-8. It was like games at Coors Field on steroids.
It is my understanding that the OF dimensions have been enlarged somewhat for this series but still not as big in CF as some MLB stadiums. Down each line will be 330 ft, the power alleys will be 387 ft, and center field will be 392 ft.
The stadium was built for the 2012 Olympics and is the home of West Ham United Football Club. Seating capacity is around 60k. Normally it would have a grass surface but I think they have put down artificial turf for this series.
June 23, 2023 at 10:55 am #225326Yeah, those two Arraez taters are a genuine disgrace and the fact that he hits the baseball according to the location of any particular pitch is a valid reason to implement a rule that would disallow that sort of nonsense. Furthermore, if he were to ever summon up the gall to attempt to lay down a bunt for a base hit, an automatic three game suspension would go a long way to prevent that sort of abhorrent behavior in the future. It’s guys like him who are placing the game in genuine danger of deteriorating to a wearisome and mundane point in which the primary goal is to win a baseball game.
