Dare we hope for 4 in a row?

It is certainly possible. They are in a short run of games against lower level competition. I’m trying to follow one game at a time as they try to climb out of the massive hole they are currently in.

Guaranteed Gorman will NOT be in the starting lineup for this one.

Before long he is going to be down there with Contreras.

They’ve managed four W’s in a row only once this season as opposed to losing streaks of eight, six and five in row. They couldn’t ask for a better team to play in the NL than DC to try and match their season high run of four W’s, but the game of baseball punishes you no matter who the opposition is if you don’t show up ready to play and fail to take advantage of an opportunity to gain a foothold. Like you mentioned, TexCard…It’s one game at a time.

The Reds win 5-4 on Monday night. Votto returns and homers and singles.

Colorado had men on at 1st and 3rd in the top of the 9th and nobody out.

    Grichuk strikesout
    McMahon strikesout
    Diaz grounds out.
    They fail to score.

I have to believe that fans of all four of the teams atop the Cardinals in the NLC wish that the Redbirds were buried a little deeper than 8 games back. Although they sit at the bottom of the division and 8 games back in the standings, there’s almost 90 games to play, which almost has to appear as though they still lurk with a chance to spoil the NLC party. Milwaukee has to remember whay happened to them in ’11, and the other 3 teams have certainly served as Redbird fodder long enough for opposing fans to approach any sense of security with an abundance of caution. At any rate, if they are indeed losing a little sleep, I’d like to see them lose a little more.

Plenty of teams are on a roll in the NL with nice winning streaks with the Reds leading the pack with 9 W’s in a row. The Giants have reeled off 7 W’s to jump over the Dodgers and move into 2nd place in the NLW and the Braves and Phillies have each won 6 in row along with Skippy’s Marlin’s now at a 5 game winning streak. Hopefully the Cardinals will decide it’s their turn to get in on a little of this action.

Arraez back up to .400 with a 5 for 5 game. That’s his third 5 for 5 game this season and his second in 3 games. He’s pretty hard to get out…

It seems like we almost always find a way to lose when Monty pitches.

Last night the announcers were endlessly harping on Gorman’s defense. Yeah, he’s got a good glove, but he needs to sit for a while, or go visit Memphis. Trotting him out there everyday until his bat comes around is not working. Try something else.

I think as long as Walker is hitting below the middle of the order guys, opponants will be happy to let him hit all the singles he wants.

Gorman is a streaky hitter, it’s always been who he is. He’s going to go through these times, and he’ll come out of it. Sitting him probably won’t make much difference, or at least won’t help matters.

Gorman is tied for the team lead in home runs and is three off the lead in RBI. Yes, he is slumping in June after a strong April and an even better May, but sending him down would be a really bad idea.

I certainly wouldn’t send Gorman to Memphis but giving him the day off today against the lefty makes sense. He might need a little reset.

Too bad they didn’t give Baker a longer look while he was up.

Agree on Baker, and then they have Burleson and Yepez too.

It’s just that when Contreras isn’t catching he’s usually the DH. When Goldschmidt or Arenado aren’t in the field they DH.

Just no room for those guys right now so hopefully the Cards can trade them for good pitching.

About the only way to get an ace is to home grow or through free agency. I would like to think the Cards now realize that Flaherty can no longer be the ace they’d hoped for.

Flaherty is about like Wacha. He’s a two pitch pitcher. With Flaherty it’s the fastball and slider. They just sit on him knowing it’s one or the other.

Does he ever throw a change up? Or a curveball? And I agree, he’s not turned out to be the ace they hoped for 3-4 years ago. I’d say this is his swan song at 250 Stadium Plaza.

As to Baker, a last place team can find a way to look at a guy if they want to. I don’t know why they didn’t want to.

As mentioned Baker didn’t get playing time because we have way too many DH candidates already. That needs to be sorted out asap. He is most likely trade bait.

I would be surprised if the Cardinals are ever going to spend $150M to $200M on a free agent starting pitcher. The risk is way too high. I think they will continue to try to develop guys like Libby, Thompson, Graceffo, McGreevy, Hence, Hjerpe, Mautz, Hansen, Paniagua, Rajcic, Love, Bedell, etc….. and look to trade for less expensive starters. There are actually some quality younger pitchers around the league still in their arb years who could probably be acquired via trade and we have some trade capital. I don’t think we have to spend $200M on starters to rebuild the rotation.

We need our OF/DH glut and middle IF glut thinned out anyway.

As to Flaherty, a bum shoulder guy is never what he was before. Not for long at least. If the FO was expecting a miracle, it wouldn’t surprise me.

    rats asked:

Does he (Flaherty) ever throw a change up? Or a curveball?

Here is his mix this season:
    Fastball 40%
    Slider 25%
    That’s about 2/3.

    The rest:
    Curve 19%
    Cutter 11%
    Changeup 3%
    Sinker 2%

I don’t know if it would improve with more use but he mostly misses the plate with his change and sinker.

Heading to the park tonight. I take full responsibility for their performance, good or bad.

Gorman = play him. I told you he would cool off, back when he was hot, and I said then, play him thru the adjustments he will need to make. If he needs a day off, fine.

Why wouldn’t he cool off? His name isn’t Musial or Pujols…Or Arraez.

Well there is cooling off then there is cooling off. He is hitting .107 for the month of June (6 for 56). We are entering the ice age here. Give him a day off.

Yeah, that’s pretty bad. Just think about it…Even if in his next 3 games he had two 5 for 5 games and a 1 for 4 game, he’d still only be hitting .243 for the month of June. There’s no hope for the guy…
