I’m not sure why some posters say we did not have enough pitching heading into the 2023 season. We had a starting rotation of:
    Flaherty
    Mikolas
    Montgomery
    Wainwright
    Matz

We had a late bullpen of:
    Helsley
    Gallegos
    Hicks
    Cabrera

Granted we didn’t have any starters named Carlton, Seaver, Gibson. And we didn’t have any relievers named Gossage, Rivera, Sutter, etc.

I thought on paper our pitching looked good enough. They always say there are teams that won because so many players had career years. I guess a team can lose when players have career bad years. And I think, so far, that’s what is happening to the Redbirds.

Flaherty was a HUGE question make coming into the season, Wainwright is old and was always subject to a decline, Matz, lolololololololololololol, Mikolas and Montgomery should be about a run of ERA better than they have been but they were the two ‘solid’ guys out of the five.

Hicks was coming off an injury, Helsley was coming off an injury. Cabby flailed around horribly the second half of last season didn’t he?

What we had was DICEY at best and Mo and De Witt should have known better and done more.

Rat, there is a difference between quantity and quality.

This will be a game between the two most underperforming teams, based on pre-season expectations, in all of baseball. As bad as we’ve got it, think about the Mets who have Scherzer, Verlander and Lindor all significantly underperforming vs. their career averages and are scooping up 1/3 of the team’s payroll. Overall, Mets are the highest paying team at $345 million compared to the Cards at $161 million, but are still 4 games under .500. That’s gotta hurt. But, that only means we might still get swept. Ha!

The winning had better start now. Now as in NOW!!!

If we fall to 20 games under .500 then we are doomed.

We might be doomed anyway but guaranteed at 20 games under we are irrevocably doomed.

I wasn’t aware of this fact, but Tony LaRussa, Earl Weaver, Bobby Cox and Tom Kelly are all in the same category in the context being that all four were once hired by teams during mid-season and then went on to manage those four teams for at least 10 years. The A’s, O’s, Braves and Twins, respectively. All four have also managed to win multiple Pennants for those four teams. So, there you go…We now know how to fix this horrible mess…Haha!

According to my calculations we have 21 more games until the All Star Break. I am going out on a limb here and say that our record will be 41-49 at the ASB.

Anybody want to post their prediction?

My prediction is that you’re favorite manager’s team repeats as WS Champions…Haha! Sorry, Rats…All jokes aside, I hope you’re right. I’d say 14-7 is possible, but I can’t detect any evidence that points to that happening.

The Cubs beat the Pirates again tonight (Thursday). We picked up a half game.

What are we now, 8 games out? I’ve lost track.

Just one winning streak, just one…….

I still believe getting rid of Marmol is the the only change needed. I just don’t think they like playing for him or respect him.. and last year was more about Yadi and Albert and not so much that Marmol was a good manager. The approach of challenging players, questioning their hustle, along with being benched because they didn’t run hard to first might have worked in the 50’s. I don’t see any changes being made until next season. Unfortunately this means the fans suffer and I don’t see any change happening until next season.. I don’t agree with all these changes need to be made. For example… if you were to switch only the managers from St.Louis & Texas, would both teams still be where they’re at? Not fair to use a 3x WS winner… how about Yadi? Would we still be the same team? Same record?
In response to Rats question. As much as I’d like for them to be closer…. I don’t think they’ll have 40 wins by the All star break.
For tonight’s game if they get it in, I am predicting a 7-4 Cardinals victory. Mikolas will take a 5-1 lead into the 6th. After giving up 2 hits along with recording 2 outs, Marmol calls for a relief pitcher who gives up a 3 run homer. Fortunately… we add a 2 run homer in the 8th and surprisingly close it out with a 1-2-3 9th.

Yeah, it looks like some rain. The possibility of a delay made me think of players often calling for time outs when an airliner on approach or takeoff near LaGuardia sometimes passed at an unusually low altitude over Shea Stadium. Sometimes on the TV or radio broadcasts the noise would drown out the PBP guys and I can recall several Cardinal broadcasters commenting on how annoying it could be during games played at times when there was a high volume of air traffic. I also recall old Shea Stadium being a hostile environment for visiting teams. Those raucous Mets fans could sometimes make as much noise as those turbo fans…Haha!

David…I don’t see anything at all wrong with placing a player into check if it seems like he’s dogging it, but under no circumstances should it be done from the podium of a post-game presser.

Shea Stadium was a dump. Citifield is very nice. Mets fans not so much

You never know David. Both the Mets and Padres have veteran, and somewhat distinguished managers, yet both have stunk it up all year despite massive payrolls. Sometimes players just insist on playing like crap no matter how distinguished the manager is.

From looking at the Doppler Radar it seems as if most of the rain might be out of the area in time for 1st pitch tonight. Then again, maybe the rain will still be around. Who knows, I guess.

If it’s rained out or delayed I can watch the Pirates at Milwaukee and see if Front Row Amy is in attendance..:)

To: gscottar- point made about the Mets and Padres managers and their lack of teams production. I think in those cases… it’s more about dealing with a bunch of egos and players who have the answers and don’t want to be managed. I don’t see that being an issue with our team. No matter how much talent the team has or how distinguished the manager…it’s just not a good fit sometimes. If Bochy were the manager of the Mets or Padres, I think they’d still have the same record. There are some managers good at handling all the egos but there are some that just want to manage players who actually want to be managed and not deal with all the BS.

I lost all respect for Buck Showalter when he had the umpires check Joe Musgrove for ear mites during the ’22 post-season. Some of you may also remember that Tony LaRussa and Showalter had to be restrained from coming to blows on the Yankee Stadium IF by both umpires and players during a game in which TLR was managing his A’s team against the Showalter managed Yankees.

To: 1toughdominican. I agree you have to do it behind closed doors if you are questioning a players hustle or performance. Calling them out for the world to see.. to use as incentive to bring up their avg or lower their era is not a good approach. Sometimes just having the extra hitting or pitching session is and work on some Mechanics is the way to go. I remember back in 85, John Tudor started the season 1-7, he made some adjustments to his delivery and finished the season going 20-1 with I believe 10 shutouts..and would have won the cy young if it weren’t for Gooden.. and if I remember correctly… Vince Coleman struggled a bit to begin the season but then finished strongly breaking a rookie record for stolen bases, and ended up with a respectable 285 average and rookie of the year honors.

Yeah, Dwight Gooden went 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA and was awarded that season’s NL CYA at the age of 20 and had won 119 games by the time he turned 25. I’ve never seen a pitcher that young that was as entirely dominant as he was. Under different circumstances he could very well have won 200 games before he turned 30 years old. It’s a shame what happened to him.

35-55 at the break (current 27-42).

8-13 next 21, .380 win percentage and in line with their current .390 win percentage.

Depressing. And no the big trade with Cleveland today for a mediocre, even though he fits right in with this crew, infielder isn’t gonna magically lift their prospects. And lastly happy trails TO as you take up your usual summer residency on the IL and the double down to the 60-day. Nice touch TO.

I know a lot of fans are calling for the firing of Marmol and I am one of them but I am curious to how many think we’d still be in the same position if we still had Albert and Maddux? Basically how much blame can we put on Blake for our poor pitching and how much blame can we put on Ward for our lack of clutch hitting? In other words, is it just a matter of patience while we wait for Blake and Ward to get established in their new roles or does the majority still fall on Marmol for his Managerial approach?
