I am really excited about Jordan Walker’s future but I don’t understand why he isn’t getting an occasional day off. You have AB’s needed for all the outfielders and Walker’s negative WAR, bad defense, and terrible BB/k rate should not be rewarded with constant play if you are trying to push the narrative that competition and positive play earn you playing time. Watching a game or 2 from the dugout wouldn’t be the worst thing for him or the team.

Interesting team stats on the year show the problem.

Sorry I edited above comment but my edit ran out of time. Bottom line is that the the Cards are higher than Dbacks in hits, average, OBP, homers, but have scored 5 less runs. Their team era is slightly lower than ours, with Dbacks batting average against being almost 40 points lower than ours. Couldn’t find a comparison in batting with runners in scoring position, but it would seem the Cards would have an average well below the Dbacks.

I like to look and compare numbers, but the fact is that the only number that really counts is runs and the Cardinals at -10 are the only team with a negative run differetial in the NLC which, when all is said, explains why they currently sit in last place. AZ currently has a +1 run differential. Certainly not outstanding, but currently good enough for 1st place in the NLW.

Even with a decent to good team average, my eye tells me the Cards have hit into more bad luck. Opening day seemed to be a bloop fest for Toronto, but our pitching needs improvement too, as Pallante giving up the slam last night proved costly.

Pallante has that herky jerky delivery and it seems even more pronounced this year. I am thinking his mechanics are out of whack somehow. That is especially concerning given that Wainwright’s mechanics issue last year seemed to go unnoticed.

It does seem like just about everything has gone wrong with this club in the early going, and we will be better than this. Pitching is the primary culprit of course, but defense has been below our usual standard, which granted is quite high, and we cannot string hits together.

The troublesome part is Milwaukee is flying high, and we are getting into a significant early deficit that will make all the more tough to climb out of later when (if?) things start to come together.

With the pitching staff hemorrhaging, you wonder how long we can keep Jordan Hicks on the roster. Tough to keep a guy that you cannot use in any winnable situation. And Pallante got Hicks-itis last night. A shut-down bullpen would have resulted in a “W”, assuming things went the same way with the two late runs.

Not only are the Cardinals struggling but earlier today Dr. Charles Stanley passed away.

    A truly sad day.

Kinda chilly down here in the cellar ain’t it? Any chance we might start digging ourselves out tonight while I’m Sleeping?

The outfield defense should be good. Infield too. Pitching should keep us in it. Lets see if we took the nerf noodles out of the bat rack.

It just occurred to me that the pen is plus a lefty now.

The Cards would probably say that they thought of Pallante as a third lefty (as well as a righty) due to his (previously) favorable results against both sides. However, the main reason may be that Romero was simply the best reliever Memphis had so far this year. 11 K/0 BB in 5 2/3 innings is pretty sharp.

Donovan has been scratched due to a “left shin abrasion.”

Well, it will be fun to see this lineup in action. It might be so wrong its right.

I did not like the Romero-Sosa trade, but the way JoJo was throwing in AAA, maybe it will be okay. We could use an “outs” guy who does not put runners on base via the BB.

Another bases loaded opportunity wasted here in the 2nd. The DBs are lucky its us they’re playing.

Yeah, that is the way it is going for us. Goldy homers with the bases empty, then gets the backwards K when they are full. We must be near the top of the league in LOB.
