ParticipantDonovan 2B
Goldschmidt 1B
Arenado 3B
Contreras C
O’Neill LF
Gorman/Yepez/Burleson DH
Carlson CF
Nootbaar RF
Edman SSLook about right?
December 7, 2022 at 12:53 pm #208356Depending on righty or lefty pitcher. But yeah, that would work.
December 7, 2022 at 12:56 pm #208358No, no, Dear Lord in Heaven no.
Edman
Donovan
Goldschmidt
Arenado
Contreras
O’Neill
Gorman/Yepez
Carlson
NootbaarThe only flaw in this lineup is that it is too right handed heavy. If Gorman could round into the form that some think he will that would help things.

December 7, 2022 at 12:58 pm #208359I would move Contreras to 2nd batter and move Goldy and Arenado down a spot. One of the Gorman/Burleson/Yepez combo could possibly move to the 5th spot by mid-season.
December 7, 2022 at 1:03 pm #208360It should probably be
Donovan
Contreras
Golschmidt
Arenado
Nootbaar
O’Neil
Gorman
Carlson
EdmanTrade Yepez for a reliever.
December 7, 2022 at 1:43 pm #208365Nootbaar
Donovan
Goldschmidt
Arenado
Contreras
Gorman
O’Neill
Carlson
EdmanDecember 7, 2022 at 1:51 pm #208368I agree with Rats.

ParticipantDonovan should lead off with whoever is hot Nootbaar-Gorman-Carlson-Edman batting second then GACO. You can throw Yepez-Burleson in the mix also. Hey with Contreras the lineup looks better already.
December 7, 2022 at 2:13 pm #208380Trade Yepez for a reliever.
Trade O’Neill way before Yepez.
December 7, 2022 at 2:30 pm #208386Nootbar and Donovan were extremely productive at the top of the lineup in 2022. Why mess with success?
December 7, 2022 at 2:41 pm #208391Starting line-up for the first round of the ’23 post-season unless Marmol thinks it’s smart to swap Donovan and Arenado…Haha!
Edman SS
Donovan 2B
Goldschmidt 1B
Arenado 3B
ONeill LF
Gorman/Yepez DH
Contreras C
Carlson CF
Nootbar RFDecember 7, 2022 at 2:43 pm #208393Thundering44
ParticipantIt would be interesting to find out what was the record of team when Nootbar, Donovan, Carlson or Edman lead off in 22.
December 7, 2022 at 2:57 pm #208394I tried to look that up a couple of times, but got lazy and a bit frustrated and canned the idea. I have no problem with swapping Nootz and Eddie at lead-off and 9th, but yeah, it would be interesting to see the team’s ’22 W/L record with that collection of guys slotted at lead-off. My shot in the dark guess is that it would show that Edman is the best choice to lead-off a game.
December 7, 2022 at 3:05 pm #208401Good line-up 1td. I also like leading off with Donovan and hitting Eddie 2nd.
December 7, 2022 at 3:44 pm #2084182022 Win-Loss record based on the 4 mentioned players leading off:
Carlson – 22-7 .759
Nootbaar – 12-8 .600
Edman – 47-39 .547
Donovan – 11-14 .440December 7, 2022 at 4:05 pm #208425Thundering44
ParticipantI guess the next question that should be asked. Is winning games more important or is individual stats more important when putting a line up together? Like someone said above don’t mess with success?
December 7, 2022 at 4:07 pm #208427The W/L column is all that counts on the net bottom line.
December 7, 2022 at 4:09 pm #208428I sure wouldn’t have guessed that Carlson led off more games than Nootz in ’22.
December 7, 2022 at 5:14 pm #2084392022 Win-Loss record by batting order:
Carlson, O’Neill, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 7-2
Carlson, Goldschmidt, O’Neill, Arenado – 7-4
Carlson, Edman, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 3-0
Carlson, Gorman, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 3-1
Carlson, Donovan, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 2-0Nootbaar, Donovan, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 11-3
Nootbaar, Donovan, Goldschmidt, Dickerson – 1-1
Nootbaar, O’Neill, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 0-1
Nootbaar, Donovan, Arenado, Gorman – 0-1
Nootbaar, Edman, Arenado, Dickerson – 0-1
Nootbaar, Gorman, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 0-1Edman, Carlson, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 6-5
Edman, Donovan, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 5-9
Edman, Goldschmidt, Arenado, O’Neill – 2-1
Edman, Goldschmidt, O’Neill, Arenado – 3-5
Edman, Goldschmidt, Arenado, Pujols – 5-4
Edman, Goldschmidt, Arenado, Yepez – 3-5
Edman, Gorman, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 9-3
Edman, XXXXXX, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 4-2Donovan, Edman, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 2-5
Donovan, Nootbaar, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 3-1
Donovan, Yepez, Goldschmidt, Arenado – 1-2This covers most of the first 4 batting orders. Most of the rest involved Dickerson, Pujols, Bader and/or Burleson mixed up within the first 4 spots.
December 7, 2022 at 5:17 pm #208442I would be happy with Nootbaar and Donovan leading off. That did seem to be the best leadoff combination last year, and Forsch’s research seems to back that up.
December 7, 2022 at 5:20 pm #208443Carlson started 11 of the first 12 games of the season. Then he was reinstated as the leadoff hitter in late July through most of 2/3s of August. Nootbaar didn’t lead off until August 11 for the first time in 2022.
December 7, 2022 at 5:21 pm #208444VS RHP
Nootbaar (L) RF
Donovan (L) 2B
Goldy (R) 1B
Carlson (L) CF
Arenado (R) 3B
Burleson (L) LF
Contreras (R) C
Gorman (L) DH
Edman (L) SSDecember 7, 2022 at 5:31 pm #208447All that info came from Baseball Reference. Under the 2022 Cardinals main page, you have to select the “Other” drop down and select “Batting Orders”. Then you can sort by clicking on the heading “1st”. There are additional ways of getting down to a data set and then just counting.
Of course, I am sure there is probably a site that already has the data sorted.
December 7, 2022 at 6:29 pm #208460Still way short of enough offense. You can’t rely on kids, they will fail every time. Go get stars…more stars. If they stop now the season is over before it starts. Now, for me the season means winning the WS. If the Cardinals are content to win the division and lose in the first round and that is what this lineup will do then they don’t need Contreras. They need more, more, more. Don’t stop Junior..give the Cardinals a real chance to win the WS.
December 7, 2022 at 6:35 pm #208463NL…it is enough offense on paper…they need to produce.
