6:45 p.m.
LHP José Quintana (4-6, 3.47) vs. RHP Paolo Espino (0-6, 4.22)
BSM // KMOX // WIJR
Also BSSE and BSSW+September 5, 2022 at 8:11 pm #199324We are facing a pitcher that is 0-6 with an 4.22 ERA. I hope we don’t turn him into Three Finger Espino in this one.
Gorman struck out twice again in Monday’s game. Pro rating out his numbers he would be striking out almost 200 times in a full season. With 26 dingers. Seems like he’s over-matched at this point. What are we going to do about him?
And with the Redbirds loss and Milwaukee win they have whittled the lead down to a mere 7.5 games with alot of baseball left. Sure hope this one loss doesn’t start us down a long losing streak.

Just what we have been…picking spots to give him starts so he can work through it. He’s still very young so there’s plenty of time for him to get his feet under him, and he will have a big part in the team’s future. You have to give him chances so long as the team is still winning.
September 5, 2022 at 8:22 pm #199326I hope not too, Rats. But to sum it up in one word, “youneverknow.”
September 5, 2022 at 8:41 pm #199328Well as Yogi would say it isn’t over until it is over but I don’t see the need to fret about our lead over the Brewers yet. We are still in very good shape. The bigger question is can we end up with a better record than the winner of the NL East in order to get the second seed. That is going to be very difficult to do.
September 5, 2022 at 9:09 pm #199330A “mere” 7.5 game lead?
Really?
The Cardinals never had a lead that large all season long until September 1… and now the sky is falling because they lost their second in their last nine? They are “merely” 25-8 since July 1.
Sheesh…
September 5, 2022 at 9:11 pm #199331gscottar…Yeah, it sure will be. Mets/Pirates was a wash today. You could imagine it as if the Redbirds were a NLE team in 3rd place, 6 game behind division leading NY and 5 games behind ATL with 27 remaining and no games facing either of the teams you’re chasing. Haha! Not out of reach, but certainly not a task to be taken on by the faint of heart. At any rate, even if the Redbirds don’t catch them we still get bonus baseball in Oct. as long as the Cardinals carry their weight in the NLC.
September 5, 2022 at 9:13 pm #199332BW…Haha! We’re all cowering as though we’ve been transformed into Phillie fans from ’64!
September 5, 2022 at 9:17 pm #199333To look at this logically, the Brewers are not going to catch the Cardinals and the Cardinals are not going to catch either the Mets or the Braves. But you never give up. Leads far greater at this stanza have been overcome. But if you’ve watched baseball as long as many of us have, there’s a certain stench in the air that can be detected, when improbable comebacks are a tangible possibility. None presently exist concerning the above mentioned teams.
September 5, 2022 at 9:25 pm #199334Pugs…On Sept. 5th 2011, the Cardinals were exactly 8.5 games off the pace behind ATL. for a WC berth in NL. Haha! Crazy things do happen…
September 5, 2022 at 10:23 pm #199335Oh they sure do happen, TD. But, like back in 2011, even though the odds were long, there were signs or indications before Sept. 5th, that a Cardinal amazing comeback were a real possibility. None of those indicators exist this year for the Brewers catching our Cards or our Cards catching either Atlanta or New York. It’s kind of difficult to put in precise words, it’s just mainly something that you feel……and more importantly, you never end up being wrong.
September 5, 2022 at 10:54 pm #199338I think there’s no escaping the likelihood the Brewers will have flashes of mediocrity down the stretch and win a game here and there, but the Cards just need to avoid a major bus wreck arriving/leaving the airport and they’re in.
On the other hand, the Cards aren’t passing both the Mets and Braves, or your next steak and wine dinner is on Pugs.
September 5, 2022 at 11:00 pm #199339The Cards aren’t passing either the Braves or the Mets, Euro. Even with our easy schedule, I would literally bet my life on it if that were possible.

The biggest sign I remember was the karma due to that idiot Nyjer Morgan for all the stupid comments he made. Was there ever a more satisfying butt whipping than watching the Cards take that punk out?
September 5, 2022 at 11:06 pm #199341I agree Pugs. That’s why I’m so willing to put up your money. I’d feel awful if I lost you money. Plus, the Mets and Braves have schedules just as favorable as the Cards.
September 6, 2022 at 9:48 am #199353We are last in the Central in power ranking. What in the hell is the criterion for that category?
September 6, 2022 at 10:59 am #199361We are last in the Central in power ranking. What in the hell is the criterion for that category?
Getting destroyed at home by the Washington Natinals?
September 6, 2022 at 11:26 am #199366Whose power rankings? Hard to comment with no source provided.
September 6, 2022 at 11:54 am #199368What power rankings? Whose power rankings? Not quite sure what a power ranking even is. The fundamental question may be, does a “power ranking” have any significance whatsoever, and the definitive answer is a resounding NO…

ParticipantThe biggest surprise is probably losing the first game of the series, and being shut out with only 2 hits in the first 5 innings against a has-been pitcher with a losing record and high ERA. Than being shut out for 3 innings on only 1 hit by a pitcher who only has 30+ major league innings under his belt. The Nats have one of the worst records in MLB, the Cardinals one of the best. The expectation would be at least 3 out of 4 in this series, and maybe even a sweep. They have
a shot now at the 3 out of 4, but a split with a team that is around 40 games under .500 wouldn’t set well with most Cardinals fans.September 6, 2022 at 12:41 pm #199372It really doesn’t matter whether they’re playing horribly or not, I can’t think of a more boring opponent to face than the Washington Senators or Nationals or whatever the heck it is that they call themselves these days. They’re simply a mundane and wearisome opponent. In my case, it may be because they somehow conjure up images of dreadfuly boring and meaningless political garble. I’m always thankful when I get to enjoy watching the Redbirds play baseball, but I genuinely think I’d rather watch them play the Kia Tigers than the Washington ballclub.
September 6, 2022 at 3:13 pm #199384Anibal Sanchez seems to be in the same class as Kyle “Purple Haze” Hendricks when it comes to facing the Redbirds.
I think things will take a positive turn this evening though.

ParticipantThanks Brian. Looks like U have some glass is half empty boys on here. Over the years I have found that one should hold negative comments, worries and concerns until after the fact, not before. If a team has had the best record in baseball since Aug. 1, that, by all rights, should be reason for optimism.
September 6, 2022 at 4:19 pm #199390BikeMike…Yep, Snachez is a guy with a career 114-118 W/L record and a 4.06 ERA who could lull coffee to sleep. I’m real surprised he’s managed to hang around the Big Leagues for 16 years.
