RHP Jack Flaherty (0-0, 5.63) vs. RHP Anibal Sánchez (1-5, 5.05)

Also BSSO and BSSW+It’s my understanding there’s about a 50% chance of rain for this one. Will they go ahead and start Flaherty if it’s raining or a good chance of rain at some point?
I’m glad the hit this stretch of winnable games and look good for the playoffs. I hope they do well once there even though I still have the same thoughts as earlier this season. But for this moment I couldn’t be happier for them as a team and individually for Pujols as he marches towards the conclusion of his career.
MIL is 2.5 games back of PHI for the final wild card spot and PHI has lost 6 of their last 7. MIL still has shot at the postseason.
My gut tells me to not let my expectations grow too high for flaherty. He still needs to prove he is the pitcher we All wish him to be. Rah cardinals! Go get em jack.
“Nolan Arenado wants Albert Pujols to come back to the Cardinals next year, 700 homers or not”…Haha! That’s the heading of a Hummel article in today’s StL. Post Dispatch. I would have bet a dollar that there was no chance that the great slugger would extend his career beyond this season, but now I’m not so sure. And if I were Arenado, I’d want him looming behind me in the batting order too! At this stage of the game, I could almost envision Pujols stepping into the box with the assistance of a walker prior to serving up hot baked taters to the fans in the cheap seats…Can you say 800? HA!
We’ve all been waiting to see if Flaherty can be an image of his former self ’cause if he is…. that will elevate the Cards even higher among the MLB’s elite. Four super starters going into the play-offs should have the other playoff teams shying away from having to play them…. even the LAD.
I’ll ask again – if there’s rain in the St. Louis area tonight or even a chance of it do they hold Flaherty back and let him pitch under dry conditions?
And as far as Pujols goes…….if the Redbirds clinch with about a week to go you can bet your posterior that Pujols will be in the lineup everyday chasing the elusive 700!

Rats, you ask another question for which we don’t have the answer. We will just have to wait and see what happens with Flaherty and the weather.
As discussed on other threads, winning the second seed has real value to the Cardinals. One should hope they keep pursuing that until the end and not let off the pedal once (if) the division is clinched.
Practical experience has taught me to reserve any expectations concerning his performance, but I’m reasonably certain that Flaherty will take a turn as the Cardinal starting pitcher this afternoon.

Yep, if you’re not born into the royal family and have to work to support yourself and your loved ones, it’s nice to have the ability to earn a decent living wage and some sort of a pension without being required to toil away every waking moment of your life. I was never a gung-ho, rah rah, take no prisoners, class warrior, Union guy, but I sure don’t know what the heck I would have done without them…Happy Labor Day!
We owe Sanchez for his ridiculous start in game 1 of the 2019 NLCS. Let’s go win one for Flaherty today.
Ha, I already thought about the Sanchez playoff game.
On the number 2 playoff seed, yes, worth keeping an eye on, but really tough to catch two good teams. Also, Cards lose tiebreaker to both teams. I’d also say don’t ease up after clinching the division even if the 2 seed is out of reach. Seemed like Shildt did that somewhat last year and killed the momentum of the hot steak.
Obviously I’m hoping to avoid being required to survive an extra post-season round, but I’m content either way simply because my favorite team seems to always close ranks and play their most exciting and best baseball when they’ve been constantly under seige and their survival depends on it. Not easy on the nerves, but hey, it’s never easy…
Flaherty looked good in his final tune-up. Man, I would love to see him even close to the top tier Flare.
What a boost at playoff time.Great tribute to the workers of this nation. My career has included time spent both in labor and management. Management has all the advantages, at least in my career experience, and still exerts its power a bit too heavy in some industries or individual companies, but at least there is a semblance of balance today that was not there a century ago. Rah laborers!!
BTW, great article in yesterday’s Denver Post on Nolan Arenado. If you ever think the Cardinals management is bad, and there are times we all express our displeasure, just know it could be much worse.
Overall the Cardinals management under the DeWitt regime has been first class.
There’s a photo in today’s StL. Post Dispatch that should be afforded consideration for a Pulitzer. It depicts Albert and Eddie sharing celebratory high fives as Pujols is crossing HP after pushing Edman across in the 8th with his 695th HR. The photo looks not at all unlike a towering Godzilla high fiving little Jack Be Nimble…HA! I’m happy to see that Eddie is wearing that Betty Crocker sliding mitt, or the big strong slugger may have risked fracturing Eddie’s throwing hand!
Junior is out of options after this year so he couldn’t be stashed in AAA next year, guess they made the decision he wasn’t going to part of the pen moving forward.
