….and here we go. Miles Mikolas – the man, the myth, the legend – makes his long awaited return.

Everyone hold your breath and cover your eyes – even though it is against the AAA Pirates….

Our next 9 games are against the Pirates and Tigers. If we have any chance at the wild card we need to go on a 7-2 run against these lowly teams. The schedule in September looks tougher.

Can not underestimate any team in MLB. The level of talent is pretty well evenly distrubuted throughout the league. Any team can beat any other team on any game. Thats what makes it fun to watch. In one sense all the teams are in a battle against .500. Trying to win more games than you lose. 50/50

And that’s what would be fun about making the playoffs. We’d probably be the worst team in there from the NL, but any team that makes it can string together a run

Is DeJong about to play himself out of a job? If he doesnt do much better the rest of the season are we going to make a big time play for one of those free agent shortstops?

Well if ownership is going to be tying potential acquisitions to our current attendance figures then we probably won’t be making a play on anyone but Yadi, Waino, and our arbitration guys. Busch looks terrible when it is half empty.

You are on a very important point, gscottar. More than most MLB teams, the Cardinals depend on gameday revenues. This could be the start of a downward cycle. Lower attendance, lower payroll, poorer results, lower attendance, lower payroll, poorer results…

Along with a downward cycle will come criticism of Bill deWallet. That was Brian’s favorite.

Speaking of which, he is on the hook to pay deJong, so I expect PDJ to get another chance next season. And we should hope that Mikolos spends the rest of his contract either good or injured. If he is healthy and bad we will see him every 5 days. But followers of the Cards already know that.

DeJong is owed $6.1 in 2022 and $9.1 in 2023. Options for 2023 and 2024.

Mikolas is owed $17 in 2022 and $17 in 2023.

Rooting for Miles. If he’s healthy and effective, he could be a very important cog moving forward.

Bling – who’s Bill deWallet? I don’t recognize that name.

There’s lots of factors that go into attendance especially with covid. We still have far higher attendance than a lot of the teams. Some teams are lucky to have 5000 people there. It also doesn’t help when you let talent like Wong go but overpaid guys like fowler and carpenter in recent past. This year has been kind of a bust cause of injuries but at the end of day, lots of teams have had that issue this year and I n years past so you can’t make excuses. Arenado was a nice step by the Cardinals but they need to step up more going into next year and I don’t want to hear about attendance as an excuse to go cheap.

With what Dejong is making, I think you could get someone to take a chance on him in a trade, mikolas with injury factors, I don’t see anyway he gets traded.

What is the over/under on Mikolas’ innings tonight, 4?

I have been critical of DeJong all year, but he is not a bad player. His defense is good and that keeps him useful. But he is right at average offensively, 102 lifetime OPS+.

And he has trended downhill on offense his entire career. His best season was his rookie year, his next best his second year, and onward to where he is working on two well below average offensive years in a row.

Personally I would play Sosa most every day. He puts the ball in play and gets on base once or twice a game. It is uncanny how many times he gets hit by the pitch though. But I like his approach and mechanics. I would have loved to have seen a full year of Sosa and Wong at the middle infield, but alas that will only happen in sim games.

    Cranny,
Pls don’t post disingenuous responses. “DeWallet” has been used for years on this board. Years.

    Tks

    UConn –

I’m going to be frank. I don’t care if that “nickname” has been on here for decades. Cardinal fans have enjoyed great pleasure watching the success the Cardinals have had under Bill Dewitt’s ownership. I don’t believe in silly little disparaging nicknames like “Dewallet” “Moronziak” and “Shildthead”. The only things out of line are those trite, juvenile, put down names. Real Cardinal fans are behind their team. They root for them to succeed. That includes ownership, general management, field management, and of course the players.

That being said, I’m more than happy to acquiesce to your wishes because of the respect I have for you.

I wonder if theres a stat for how many times a player can swing at a pitch without even touching once?

We need to score some runs. Why do we have so much trouble against poor pitchers?

UConn, I have great respect for you as a moderator, poster and person and always have. I understand what you are trying to do and appreciate that you attempt to keep things strictly about baseball. However, I must come to Cranny’s defense here. You publicly called him out for using a derogatory nickname for Bader about 2 months ago. (post 165323) I don’t see why the same rules towards respect would not apply to the owner of the Cardinals as it does for players and other posters.

Well bccran actually I personally think they need to raise the bar a little. Commented last night about everybody getting hits except 2 regular guys dwelling at the bottom of the order. After the game I saw Schildt in press conference congratulate them for both drawing walks? Sometimes with people to raise them up you have to let them know that you expect more out of them. Slump, streaky, funk or bad ju-ju whatever you want to call it I think I’ve seen way too much of it the last few years with these overpaid guys working their way down. The high paid “professionals” should be expected to do better or they should ride the pine.
