One of the Cardinals behaves like a hot dog. I don’t believe that’s a nickname.
More of an adjective. Right?Entertainment is only ‘real life’ to the entertainers – since it’s their job.
For the rest if us real life = job, family, current events like Covid-19, etc.
The entertainment industry provides us with a diversion / distraction from issues we may be facing. A chance to recharge / reset if you will.
If nary another professional baseball game was played we would miss it greatly and lament its demise; but, there is nothing essential about it. Life as we otherwise know it could continue.
This whole discussion is nonsense. We have lost sight of the distinction between colorful language and mean spiritedness.
One of those clunker games teams have now and then. Unfortunately when you are a .500 ball club you will have quite a few of those.
The one part that brought me a little enjoyment was the talk about the Cardinal Hall of Famers. I am concerned that Bill White was not there. Hope he is doing okay.
As I have said before the Cardinals aren’t really cheap when it comes to the payroll. Could they bump it higher? I am sure they could but they are usually close to the top 10 in MLB. The problem is they don’t spend it wisely. Over the last few years we have had way too much payroll tied up in underperforming veterans, which prevents us from acquiring mid-season upgrades. You know the list: Fowler, Carpenter, Mikolas, Martinez, Miller, Holland, Cecil, Leake, Gregerson, etc…
We haven’t gotten much bang for the buck.
Generally, I would agree, but this past winter was different, likely due to COVID in 2020. Letting Wong walk is the poster child as far as I am concerned. Other than reupping Molina and Wainwright and taking the free gift from Colorado, they stood pat. The increases for in house players were not that substantial. They just went frugal – and the results validate it. Not spending to at least get adequate MLB-proven reserves either for position players or pitching has hamstrung the 2021 team.
By payroll no the Cardinals aren’t cheap, they have a sizeable payroll. It’s how they spend their money though. Wong did everything he was asked, worked hard, and at the end of it all, when he had gotten to that higher level and was now due for the Cardinals to pay up, they said just take a walk. Now yes they owed carpenter and Fowler a lot of money but that wasn’t Wongs fault. They chose to pay Fowler money he was never worth and carpenter was well into decline when they chose to give him a multiyear extension of rediculous money. I understand the front office is going to make mistakes just like the team but just like the team they are held accountable for that. Getting arenado was nice but was kind of a wash when they let Wong walk. Assuming arenado chooses to stay with the Cardinals, they are going to have to up their game going into next season. I don’t want to hear about lack of attendance as an excuse. You build it they will come.
I think there are two things in play, overlapping. First, compared to the Brewers and some others the Cards bungled the whole pandemic and minors reconfiguration situation. Second the Cards’player development and evaluation component went off the track a number of years ago so the system was about to go off a cliff pandemic or no pandemic.
We can guess but do not know what failures led to these issues, and therefore do not know if effective corrective action has been taken. Nothing obvious has happened though. So we have no rational basis to think that things will be better. Maybe and maybe not.
The Cardinals bungled the pandemic situation, overlapping with the minors reconfiguration? Please explain that.
