I have no problem calling players out for things they do we don’t care for. I’m disappointed in the performances guys like Carp, DeJong, Miller, etc. I’m disappointed in Mo for not adding an experienced left handed hitting outfield bat after the NA trade. But making up childish nicknames is juvenile. I did it when I called Bader “Harriett” because of his girlish long permed curls, was called out for it correctly, apologized, and refrained from it going forward.

I see Nooty is 3 for 3. What’s everyone else been doing? Also looks like Mikolas did well.

Well bccran I thought Harriet was pretty funny – a play on words . His name is Harry- he is hairy- and didn’t click in girlish hairstyle but he is into his hair. He flips it around and paws it like a girl sometimes.I think “Hairy” would be a better one. But I’m pretty much known as a Smart As-. So thats me. I don’t call anybody dirty names though like Schildt— or even Moron—. Don’t need to be offensive just clever. I’ve used DeWallet before myself and personally don’t see it as offensive at all. Everybodys different though. Best to apologize whether you deserve it or not and move on

Everyone else has been stranding runners. It’s clutch-hit-free Friday.

Mitch Keller is 3-10 with a 6.86 ERA going into this game. How in the world does he shut the Cards out for 5 innings?

PDL gives up a solo HR to make it 4-0 in the 8th. Horton says that’s a big run to give up. So let’s see if the Cards lose 4-3.

Just like he did last time?

One can do a simple search of the forum history by clicking on FORUMS at the right of the top menu bar and entering the term in question. There are over two dozen instances of people using “DeWallet”, a term that originated with Bernie Miklasz when he was with the Post. Making fun of a player’s appearance or demeanor or ethnicity via unflattering labels has happened here, too, but that is different as I see it. We try to nip it in the bud.

Frankly, I wish our posters were mature enough that the name-calling never happens. We can do better.

Well poor hitting with runners in scoring position. Our money guys struggled. Bader still struggling. I think he needs a day off to just kind of reset. Sometimes that’s all it takes. He hasn’t had a day off since coming back from injury. Made sense when he was hot, now he isn’t. I know we are down a regular outfielder but we got guys who can step up for a game. I will say baders defense has been great and has a Truly saved some runs over replacement but everybody needs some perspective now and again. He did let that ball get by him tonight so that didn’t help. Mikolas pitched fine for his first game back. Their pitcher is good but we have struggled with him for whatever reason.

I meant their pitcher isn’t good.

I wonder if it is time to shake up the lineup a little. 10 hits without a single run is crazy. Shildt needs to try to come up with a different formula. How about:

    Edman
    Nootbar
    Arenado
    Goldschmidt
    O’Neill
    Sosa
    Molina
    Bader
    P

If DeJong starts at SS, move Molina to 6th and bat DeJong 7th.

As a side note, Bader needs to get his swing corrected again. He has reverted it back to his previous form and dipping his shoulder too much.

Brian I definitely agree with you far as name calling. I don’t think the terms used against ownership is the same as what people say about players. Dewitt has earned that nickname. That at least has to do with baseball. A lot of the ones aimed at players do not. But for most part, name calling shouldn’t happen.

Sometimes the nickname for DeWitt is used in a derogatory manner and sometimes it isn’t. When a poster is constantly complaining about how the team doesn’t spend enough money and uses the nickname, it seems obvious to me that they intend it as a name calling. How can it be differentiated from derogatory or not is the problem. I don’t understand why it should be allowed any more than any other name calling but it is Brian’s site. I will abide by his decisions as I am only a guest.

Well forsch the Dewallet moniker obviously is in response to his not spending money on quality players, rather relying on faith and hope that someone who makes far less rises up and does the same. That at least has to do with baseball regardless of side you are on. The stuff about players appearances has nothing to do with baseball. A big distinction. I think clearly Brian was calling for people to refrain from using any names in his response.

I was just glad to see that Mikolas pitched reasonably well and his arm didn’t fall off.

Good grief. If someone wants to poke a little fun at a public figure (which professional entertainers certainly are) with a funny nickname what is the harm?

As long as you stay away from race and are not over the top – it comes with the territory.

Sure, it may be a little sophomoric but sports are just entertainment for most of us – an escape from the realities of real life. A way to blow off some steam.

The PC, snowflake movement has been carried way too far in my opinion.

    Forsch,
My post in this thread was regarding his claim not to recognize the nickname which is why I used the term “disingenuous”. It’s isn’t credible that any poster who has posted here for any length of time would not recognize that means of referring to DeWitt.

My post didn’t actually address whether the nickname was appropriate. Whether I should have addressed its appropriateness is another matter (and a good point by you).

I agree with Brian that I prefer players and personnel be referred to by their given names, with exceptions being made for The Man, etc.

I also admit I have a grown daughter who thinks St Louis used to employ two players named “Wusscakes” and “Bucket of Poop”…

There are plenty of message boards out there where people can write just about anything about anyone. We are not one of them. I will never apologize for the fact that we maintain higher standards in our discussions.

    Wooster,
To clarify- those were my own admittedly derogatory nicknames for those players. I remember using Wusscakes on the board but not BOP.

Sporttrac has the Cardinals payroll at #9 in MLB. They’re paying huge dollars for Goldy and NA. Rightly or wrongly they honor superior performance with large extensions for guys like Matt Carpenter and Miles Mikolas. Maybe that’s why I don’t care for that nickname for our owner. It’s degrading. And just because Bernie M. coined it, that sure doesn’t make it legitimate, accurate, or appropriate.

As far as the game last night, here’s a quote from the Pirate’s color man on their announcing team –

“And then he ran around the field showing everyone, even though the inning was over.”

That player in August – .172/.252/.172/.425. Carlson will end up in center, O’Neill in right, and either Nootbaar or Burleson in left.

I guess I should point out that I didn’t call DeWitt ‘DeWallet’. I said if we do get into a cycle of less revenue and less spending we will start seeing people saying it again.

Thanks for the clarification, BlingBoy. But I would ask why it was ever appropriate. The Cards don’t spend like the Yankees or Dodgers, but they’ve never been cheap under this ownership. They give that impression because they don’t like the potholes in giving huge FA contracts to outsiders. They like to test drive the car first. I don’t blame them.

Everyone has their own personal preferences, but we have thoroughly explained our policies here. Like it or not, they take precedence. Please focus on the Cardinals and the moderators will moderate and address non-baseball matters as needed. Thank you.
