We have recalled RHP Johan Oviedo from Memphis (AAA).
RHP Carlos Martínez has been placed on the 10-day IL (right ankle). pic.twitter.com/DILpb7uEeI

Carlos slipped on the steps during Flaherty’s home run celebration on Friday, but imaging came out clean and the doctors said he could pitch on Saturday. It must have worsened.
We will get more from Shildt later this afternoon.

Participant5-9-21….. I commented
Martinez to the IL?? Let’s see what transpires.
Gee…..what a surprise. Any physical complaint = to the IL. It happens nearly every time.
May 12, 2021 at 10:40 am #160952Guys do dumb things and get hurt…guys do smart things and get hurt…this seems a minor thing…too bad though as he was kind of on a roll
What upsets me..is that we called up Oviedo…Tuesday…yet he is supposed to start Thursday… why Tuesday?
Why not actually call up something that could be useful for a couple of days before needing Oviedo?
You know, like maybe a pinch runner like Hurst for an extra inning game on Tuesday?
Or an extra catcher so we can use Knizner for a couple pinch hit opportunities without worry like Tuesday?
Or maybe an extra arm in case we go to extra innings like Tuesday?
OR maybe just anything..it is a waste of a spot for 2 games that could be a big deal…why bring him up… just a dumb move and I could care less what the party line is on the “Reason”, it is a mistake plain and simple.
Especially with the taxi squad, you could have put Oviedo on Taxi so he is up and prepping…but bring back Ali or really anyone
so frustrating…

stlcard25ParticipantOviedo was optioned on the 6th and thus was ineligible to be called up before 10 days was up unless there was an injury. So if they called that player up for yesterday and today, the only way Oviedo could pitch tomorrow was if there was another injury.
May 12, 2021 at 10:54 am #160955I also explained this in my article yesterday on the home page. In reality, it was a creative way to get Oviedo up sooner to help than would otherwise be allowed.
P.S. Oviedo’s next start will be on Friday in San Diego.
May 12, 2021 at 3:34 pm #160974At what point in the future do i get called a “boomer” for still calling it the DL?
May 12, 2021 at 4:10 pm #160979
MrperkinsParticipantI think Rat and I will back you if anyone cries foul at referring to the list as the DL.
July 7, 2021 at 6:43 pm #165956Figured we could re-use this thread. Martinez has a tear in a ligament in his right thumb. Will impact him for some period of time. Not expecting him in rotation anytime soon, per Shildt. Had MRI today after grip strength did not improve in recent days. Heading back to StL now. Will know more about recovery time after examined there.
Lars Nootbaar, who has been traveling with the team, has been activated.
July 7, 2021 at 6:46 pm #165958Wow, that’s a big blow. I assume he will be out for a while. If so, they will need someone to step up despite his up and down results.
July 7, 2021 at 6:55 pm #165960Another nail in his coffin in St. Louis. I think it’s almost a given that he will not be wearing the Birds on the Bat uniform next year. Barring, of course, a major resurgence in the 2nd half when he returns. And since we have been waiting on that for years I am not expecting it.

jj-cf-stlParticipantWell said rats

stlcard25ParticipantI think Carlos is a reliever going forward, unless he wants a trial run on a bad team on a one year show me deal next year. In that role, I could possibly see him back in St Louis. But more likely he pitches for a rebuilding team in 2022.

ParticipantAnother one bites the dust.
July 7, 2021 at 10:48 pm #165998Who’s next? I really don’t want Woodford being the replacement, but that’s the likely choice.
July 8, 2021 at 2:52 am #166001Well, if things get any worse, I’m available.

ParticipantI read in a couple of articles that Martinez is done in St. Louis. Both say its best for both.
July 8, 2021 at 1:54 pm #166024Lars Nootbar activated. Nice. I’m happy for him. He gets to pick up an extra $3,100/day. I wonder if the players get paid during the All-Star break. If so, he could pick up, maybe $25,000, in the next week just for being on the 26-man roster. And if they keep him after the break, obviously, quite a bit more.
July 8, 2021 at 2:55 pm #166026The problem Nyquis is will we be able to actually get anything of value for him in a trade or whatever…
July 8, 2021 at 5:03 pm #166027I wonder if the players get paid during the All-Star break.
My understanding is yes, as long as they are on the active roster those days. Players get paid their annual salaries over the championship season, from the first game of the season to the last game of the regular season. This year that is 186 days, Apr 1 to Oct 3. Minimum salary is $570,500 this year or $3,067.20 per day (570,500 divided by 186). It doesn’t matter how many games are played during that period or if the player actually plays in the games. All that matters is if the player is on the active roster.

Are those articles built around quotes or are they opinion/speculation pieces? Please share how to read them. Thanks.
July 8, 2021 at 6:46 pm #166031The idea leaving is best for CMart seems a stretch. He gets plenty of opportunity and would have the chance to pitch his way onto the opening day rotation next year. Fans don’t boo him or anything. The team obviously won’t pay the $17M next year but that doesn’t mean a deal won’t be reached. We need all the rotation candidates we can get.
July 8, 2021 at 6:52 pm #166032After the buyout, I too wonder if CMart might go for a pillow deal hoping to earn a long term contract after 2022. I see no bitter feelings between management and him, so it is possible that he comes back.

I don’t know about that. If I recall Mo had some comments at one time regarding players who ride around on scooters taking videos.
