7:15 p.m.
RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon (0-1, 6.75) vs. RHP Yu Darvish (3-1, 1.88)
FS Midwest // FOX Sports 1 // KMOXAugust 18, 2020 at 7:36 am #135667I have seen Darvish twice in the new season and he does look a lot better than his previous debacle with the Cubs. But I am not liking seeing a night game followed by a DH day set of games and then travel home to meet the Reds – if they are cleared by then.
August 18, 2020 at 8:15 am #135674Hard to tell which would be worse – playing today after two yesterday – or playing tonight ahead of two tomorrow. At least it may be cooler in the evening. But as you note, there is travel tomorrow night, too. Choose your poison in this oddest of years…

ParticipantI know that Nogowski and Godoy are on the Taxi Squad. Who is the third? Also Woodford is the 29th for tomorrow’s DH.

2) Who is the third?
3) Also Woodford is the 29th for tomorrow’s DH.Check the Roster Matrix for details.
1) Yes, that is correct.
2) There are four currently. The others are Jesus Cruz and Roel Ramirez. (Recently the rules were changed to increase the taxi squad from a max of three to five.)
3) Woodford was the 29th on Monday, and it would be a good guess that he will be the pick again Wednesday, but they usually don’t announce this in advance. It may change based on how Tuesday plays out.August 18, 2020 at 8:57 am #13568314NyquisT
ParticipantThe Cards should adopt the great Ernie Banks’ quote as their new motto…. “let’s play two”.
Carpenter likes the fact that there is little pressure on the team to win and to make the play-offs. If they do it will be a surprise….. after what they have and will be going through. I have to agree with him.
August 18, 2020 at 12:11 pm #135705Darvish has gone 6 innings or more in his last 3 starts. 2 of those were against the Royals and Pirates. He has been very good other than the opener he pitched.
I would like to see Carlson get a day off but that would mean Bader would have to start wouldn’t it? Dylan looked winded yesterday in the 2nd game. Also Edman could use a day off.
they’ll come lefty heavy on Yu.

Goldschmidt

BaderAlso it appears that our bullpen might be limited Ponce needs to go at least 4 innings today. We may have to double dip from yesterdays dh to cover for Wed double dip. If I am correct the only pitchers who didn’t toss yesterday besides the starters were Gallegos, Gant, Elledge, Miller, Meisenger and Woodford.

WietersAugust 18, 2020 at 5:35 pm #135715As we wait for tonights game I have one beautiful thought about having even a short baseball season plus the playoffs. That is the thought that we can watch baseball instead of all this blankety blank politics. I just turned off the evening news because I am just totally sick of nothing but politics and riots. The most soothing words to my ears are PLAY BALL.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGant, Gallegos and A. Miller threw in game 1. Elledge, Meisenger and Woodford didn’t toss yesterday. Woodford is now listed on Summer Camp south (back to 28) on the roster matrix. So 9 inning game tonight, Ponce and 2 relievers, and the other starters, if no pitcher back-to-back games is still in place.

August 18, 2020 at 7:22 pm #135721
jj-cf-stlParticipantI watched Darvish last start vs MIL. He carried a no-hitter into the 7th. His curveball was key for him.
August 18, 2020 at 7:45 pm #135723Had a chance there and couldn’t get the run across. Frustrating.
August 18, 2020 at 8:02 pm #135727
jj-cf-stlParticipantPonce competing in the strike zone well. 36 pitches, 23 strikes.
August 18, 2020 at 8:05 pm #135728
jj-cf-stlParticipantGrounder gets through for Kolten after hammering a line drive out his first AB.
August 18, 2020 at 8:06 pm #135729
jj-cf-stlParticipantugh, another inning ending DP
August 18, 2020 at 8:07 pm #135730Whoa, Darvish has really grown his hair out. But then haircuts were tough to get for a couple months there.
August 18, 2020 at 8:11 pm #135731
jj-cf-stlParticipanttuber. centered like cross hairs
August 18, 2020 at 8:13 pm #135732
jj-cf-stlParticipantand then a 4 pitch walk. pull a Flaherty Ponce, get mad.
August 18, 2020 at 8:17 pm #135733IMO, this inning will be Ponce’s last. His pitch count is over 55 now.
August 18, 2020 at 8:20 pm #135734Last batter for PDL. C’mon Daniel!!
August 18, 2020 at 8:22 pm #135738
jj-cf-stlParticipantHe hasn’t had his command this inning. Kipnis K’d on ball 4 or this would be much worse. Then Schwarber gets rang up on ball 4 to end the inning. Agree, he’s done.
August 18, 2020 at 8:29 pm #135739Carlson in a big spot here.
August 18, 2020 at 8:32 pm #135740
stlcard25ParticipantDylan Carlson has been in a lot of important situations so far. Is that three at bats with the bases loaded in his young career already? Plus the key spot last night.
Unfortunately for him, he’s been pretty awful in those spots. Another weak tapper leads to a force out at home. Now up to Fowler. Can the Cards manage at least a run here??
August 18, 2020 at 8:34 pm #135741
stlcard25ParticipantDexter Ks. The Cubs are gonna squirm out of this one, aren’t they?
