August 18, 2019 at 4:40 pm #102724That game last night which they won 15-13 could have been lost in the 9th when with bases loaded, no outs and Turner batting for the Nats, he struck out on a 3-2 pitch that was 6 inches high. He had barely fouled one off in the same place one pitch earlier. If he had just taken the ball it would have been a Nats walkoff. Then Hader struck out the next two also……..and the game went on.

I hope they keep hemmorhaging runs, but we’ve often seen that a staff’s recent success or failure has little to do with how our offense performs against them, Pirates nothwithstanding.
August 18, 2019 at 7:55 pm #102742Starting tomorrow the Cardinals play 15 out of the next 18 at home.
August 18, 2019 at 9:04 pm #102748And the Cubs have a bunch of home games coming up. Its going to be tough to gain any ground on them.
Plus, and this will probably be a killer for us, there is that late season four (4) game series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Undoubtedly we will lose at least three of those games, and probably all four. If we don’t have a 3-4 game lead on them by then we will probably be toast.

August 19, 2019 at 6:24 am #102757Rutsbaddy, I love your optimism. 🙁
August 19, 2019 at 7:25 am #102766I don’t like the fact that Davies is on the mound for the Brewers. He has a changeup that, when right, makes the Cubs Hendricks look like a little leaguer. But when wrong – POW.
What will it take to end the Carpenter – wait – wait – wait -wait and see if he gets good experiment when it is obvious that we have better hitters sitting on the bench and they can field just as well if not better too. September approaches, heavy home schedule at hand. Grow a pair Mo and Shildt and show him the pines for a bit.
Munoz must have had a hangover yesterday. He was swinging at pitches that were FEET out of the strike zone. Only one was on a hit & run.
August 19, 2019 at 8:38 am #102771Well it is time for TCN to give the FO their druthers as to who should be brought up when the AAA season ends after Sept 1. Of course the bullpen will grow with bodies like Ponce and Cabrera and the outfield will be adding Bader and ONeil. So that leaves room for TCN to add to the list and then gripe when they are sent home instead of coming up to help take the NLC. You have to assume that Edman, Thomas and Arozorena will either remain or come back but there are others who can get some valuable time even as just bench observers. Names please. I am of the opinion that it is the young bodies who will help propel this team to the playoffs – uh and I must confess that I saw no hope for only a month ago.
August 19, 2019 at 8:55 am #102775Aren’t we still in 1st?
We don’t need to gain ground on anyone, just try to keep whatever we are doing going.
Edman should be the starting 3bman period
Thomas, or Randy in the OF everyday until ONeill or Bader return (hopefully only deservedly so)
Carp’s defense has been stellar lately, but his bat is a nightmare. Sit him on the bench in the JMart pinch hitting role and let him work it out off the bench and in the cage. 2 starts a week is more than fair in a playoff and division title race
We are in a division and wild card race folks…whether it seems we should or not…i wish Shildt would understand that too… the time for hand holding and HOPING a guy turns it around is over…Carp doesn’t have it this year…im not saying DFA him, but you can sit him….JMart doesn’t seem the same either…sit him…Bader too… play the guys who are playing well…whether you’re paying them or not
Yes, if Carp turns it around we could be amazing…but it has not happened yet this year…and there isnt much left…had he had a month of crazy good play and then all the lack…fine…but he hasnt…he has been bad from day one… guys have bad years…this is his it seems… sit him, play Edman at 3b and be done with it… we have much more talented and impact OF options that shoud not be sitting to let a poor OFer like Edman play there
August 19, 2019 at 9:03 am #102781Aren’t we still in 1st?
We don’t need to gain ground on anyone, just try to keep whatever we are doing going.
I think Rat was pointing out that we had better have a little cushion before we go to Wrigley that last week and he is right. It seems like the last time we won a series there Rogers Hornsby was fielding grounders at 2B.
August 19, 2019 at 9:04 am #102783Looks like a winable 6 weeks remain. 3 sets of 3 against the Brew Crew- 2 sets at home. A 4 set against Cubs at Wrigley and last last 3 games at home against Cubs. Got Rockies and San Fran in there too. Baseball has an equalizing effect on the teams. Nobody totally dominates which makes it much easier to stay a fan of a team. As always our future is in own hands. Address our weaknesses and play to our strengths . Don’t worry too much about what the other guys. Go Cardinals!
August 19, 2019 at 9:18 am #102788Three words, Minuteman3…… “Alexander The Great”.
Rutsbaddy
Do we have yet another nickname for the Esteemed One, Forschster? Rat has more nicknames than Carpenter has quality 2019 at bats.
The Crew needs to be promptly put in their place in this series. And their place is in the back seat. Sweep these guys are we send them weeping out of town a full 5 games off the pace. As always, we have to pitch very delicately to one, Christian Stephen Yelich. Beware The Moose too, as he’s on the loose. Who could forget Bobby Reed’s famous words last year when we were pondering possible additions….”No Moose is good Moose”. Well, if asked again, Bobby just may change those words to “The Moose is on the loose….let’s corral him”.
August 19, 2019 at 9:20 am #102789Oops….kind of messed up on the quote thing.

ParticipantI can’t understand why so many here still feel that the Cubs will hands-down win the division. Any one of the top three teams can get hot and take the NLC going away. When a team is hot home/away and who is on the schedule doesn’t seem to matter.
The Cubs aren’t that good. GO CARDS…. slam that Brew Crew right into the ground.
August 19, 2019 at 9:27 am #102791The Cubs fate will rest on what they can do on the road the rest of the way because they are almost unbeatable at home. While we get them at Busch for three to close things out some astute observers are concerned that those games may not matter if we get swept in the four game set at Wrigley the week before. It is a legitimate concern considering we haven’t won a game at Wrigley yet this season.
August 19, 2019 at 9:44 am #102794August 19, 2019 at 10:12 am #102797Cards: 40 games left (24 home, 16 away)
Cubs: 38 games left (21 home, 17 away)
Brewers 38 games left (19 home, 19 away)I tend to agree with the thinking that the Cards need a cushion going into Wrigley in September. If the Cards don’t have at least a 2-game lead at that time, it will be a tough challenge to finish on top of the division.
August 19, 2019 at 10:29 am #102798I tend to think the Cubs need a cushion coming into St. Louis for the last series of the year. If they don’t have a lead they will not win the division.
August 19, 2019 at 10:44 am #102801It is time to make some adjustments to the line up as others have suggested. Thomas and Arozarena need to get a shot to see what they can do. Edman has proven he is capable of holding down third base defensively. Carp just is not getting it done offensively and that is a huge issue for this team. Who would have guessed that Jose Iglesias would have a better slash line than Carp in mid-August?
I think the Redbirds have allowed the second fewest runs in the NL behind the Dodgers. The defense has improved significantly, bull pen has been strong all year , but starting pitching remains a concern. They need Mikalos to return to his 2018 form the last few weeks of the season and Wacha to step it up.
The bigger concern is offense. They have scored the second fewest runs in the NL (think about that for a second). Almost every starting position player’s slash line is lower than career averages – Carp having the largest shortfall. The team strikes out a-lot and their batting average with RISP is terrible.
I am not sure if the light will go on in time for several of the veterans (specifically Carp). That is why I am advocating shaking things up a bit.
August 19, 2019 at 11:06 am #102806My fear is that even if Carpenter (81 OPS+) would be benched, we would just see Munoz (73 OPS+) along with Edman (90 OPS+) every day. If those were the only two choices – stay the current course or play Nunez every day – then I might still go with Carpenter’s upside.
We all know those are far from the only two real choices, but by his actions, Mike Shildt disagrees. So here we sit…
Corrected above.

ParticipantHell I’m not conceding any away to the Cubs. Some talk about CHC as if the walk on water in Wrigley. They’ll be the ones hitting the links in Oct.
August 19, 2019 at 11:45 am #102811I’ve always been a Carpenter fan, but we’ve come to the point now, after 124 games, that he’s not going to turn it around this year. Whatever is bothering him is most likely going to continue to do so for the rest of the season. You statistics eaters out there no doubt find reasons to play down the value of Edman (and Thomas for that matter) and show that somehow Carp is superior with the numbers, but I say this kid is exciting. He hustles. He runs fast. He displays exuberance. He’s hitting mostly well. He’s fun to watch. Carp’s overall demeanor is like a man trying to run in four feet of water. I wish, hope, pray that he breaks out. But he won’t. So let’s play the kids. We may not win the division, but it might be more fun to watch.
August 19, 2019 at 11:48 am #102812If you check out the home wins/loss in the standings you will see cards and brew crew about the same near half and half. The cubs are around only 10 more wins than loss at home. How this gets turned into “unbeatable at home” beats the ? Outa me. Sounds like more media BS. Thats why I really want to take it this year. Tired of all the Cubs hype. So lets just go win it. Go Cardinals!
August 19, 2019 at 12:00 pm #102817Brian: Do you mean Munoz? Don’t know any Nunez.
