St. Louis Cardinals Organization Roster Matrix – 2021 Spring Training

NOTE: As of 4/1/21, this version of the roster matrix is no longer current. It reflects changes during the 2021 spring training. It should now be considered a historical reference document. For the active roster matrix during the 2021 regular season, click here.

One-time major change in approach

This newest refresh of the Roster Matrix, covering St. Louis Cardinals and the minor league system, is very different than usual.

The lingering effects of COVID have altered the schedule for most of what remains of minor league baseball dfor 2021, even while the Major League and Triple-A clubs expect to play a full schedule on time.

Spring camps across the game are being staggered to limit the number of players in the facility at once. From the Cardinals’ specific perspective, only St. Louis and Triple-A Memphis will begin the regular season on time, in early April.

Because the Double-A and Class-A players will not report to their spring training until the MLB and Triple-A players vacate, the 67 players currently in big league camp with St. Louis are certain to make up the Opening Day rosters for St. Louis and Memphis.

This level of relative certainty is unprecedented in recent times, and as such, the Matrix reflects it. This is a deviation from the past, when only prior rosters were shown in spring camp versions of the Matrix.

This time around, the 28 players listed below as being with St. Louis reflect those who ended 2020 in the majors. They also make up the default 2021 opening St. Louis team, though there will surely be tweaks as the club slims down to its 26 target for Opening Day.

The 39 other players in camp – whether on the 40-man roster or non-roster invitees (or NRIs) – are listed separately as “Others in camp”. In the near future, the majority of them will make up the initial Memphis roster. The handful of other remaining will join St. Louis’ in-season taxi squad or stay behind in Jupiter for the next camp (Double-A and Class-A) while fighting to fill the next Triple-A roster opening.

All minor league players listed on the Matrix below the current 67 in St. Louis camp remain on the roster at the level at which they finished 2020. They will move once their initial 2021 team assignments are clear.

For reference, the previous matrix outlined all organizational transactions during the long and unusual 2020-2021 offseason. It also shows the signing status of Cardinals free agents at both the majors and minors level this winter.

A refresher

If you are new to The Cardinal Nation and not familiar with the Cardinals organization roster matrix, here is quick summary:

As the 2021 big league spring camp opened, the St. Louis Cardinals had 264 players under contract from top to bottom, including an almost-full 40-man roster (39).  the 40. The 40-man members are called out in bold.

The matrix places each of the 264 by position at his assigned level in the system as well as by position. All players who were assigned to the 2020 alternate camp in Springfield but not invited to 2021 big league camp have been returned to their prior rosters. Many of these team assignments will surely change as spring training ends, but the Roster Matrix is not intended to be a projection; but rather a current view.

Another point. Though it is clear that the State College Spikes and Johnson City Cardinals will no longer operate as Cardinals affiliates in 2021 and beyond, players still reside on those on-paper rosters. So until the organization moves them, they will remain on the corresponding rosters here, as well.

The matrix is updated whenever transactions occur.

Nowhere else will you find this current and comprehensive single-page view of the entire Cardinals organization plus a decade of history.

(Do not be concerned about the order of the players’ names within position. It has no relative significance.)
