St. Louis Cardinals Organization Roster Matrix – 2020-2021 Offseason

NOTE: As of 2/21/21, this version of the roster matrix is no longer current. It reflects the changes during the 2020-2021 offseason. It should now be considered a historical reference document. For the active roster matrix during 2021 spring training, click here.
With the surprising and sobering open to the 2020-2021 free agent season, a refresh of the Roster Matrix is in order.

As you will see below, the initial transactions incorporate the flurry of roster moves both on and off the 40-man roster as the St. Louis Cardinals said goodbye to a number of players as well as brought others off the injured list, as MLB rules require.

The previous matrix outlined all organizational transactions during the shortened 2020 regular season of 60 games as well as the team’s brief foray into the playoffs.

If you are new to The Cardinal Nation and not familiar with the Cardinals organization roster matrix, here is quick summary:

As the 2020 World Series concluded, the St. Louis Cardinals had 276 players under contract from top to bottom, including a full 40-man roster plus five who were out for the season and temporarily exempted from the 40. The 40-man members are called out in bold.

The matrix places each of the 276 at his assigned level in the system as well as by position. All players who were assigned to the alternate camp in Springfield have been returned to their prior rosters. Many of these team assignments will surely change in the spring, but the Roster Matrix is not a projection; it is a current view.

Another point. Though it is clear that the State College Spikes and Johnson City Cardinals will no longer operate as Cardinals affiliates in 2021 and beyond, players still reside on those rosters. So until the organization moves them, they will remain on the corresponding rosters here, as well. But with the next update planned for the opening of 2021 spring training camp, this will likely be the two clubs’ Roster Matrix swan song.

The matrix is updated whenever transactions occur.

Nowhere else will you find this current and comprehensive single-page view of the entire Cardinals organization plus a decade of history.

(Do not be concerned about the order of the players’ names within position. It has no relative significance.)

Looking ahead and back

Now that you’ve found this page once, remember one of three ways to get back here. Bookmark the page, type “Roster Matrix” in the dark blue search box at the upper right (click on the magnifying glass icon) or use the menu at the left of the page: “ROSTERS/PLAYERS/MOVES” > “TRANSACTIONS/ROSTER MATRIX”.

While you are using that menu, note TCN’s full rosters and player pages for every level and every player in the Cardinals system. These rosters remain in sync with the Roster Matrix and carry biographical information on all players.
