Late Friday, hours after the St. Louis Cardinals placed Adam Wainwright and Andrew Miller onto the injured list, activated outfielder Harrison Bader from the IL and recalled reliever Kodi Whitley, the club made another pair of moves.

Right-handed pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon went onto the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. His replacement is another righty, Jake Woodford, who was already with the team in Pittsburgh as a member of three-man taxi squad (along with catcher Tyler Heineman and infielder Jose Rondon).

“Ponce,” 29, made two starts as part of the season-opening rotation with very mixed results before appearing in three games out of the bullpen, closing each. His most recent outing was a scoreless inning Thursday to close the Phillies series.

Overall in 2021, Ponce de Leon has a 1-1 record with an 8.71 ERA. In just 10 1/3 innings, he yielded 10 runs on 12 hits and seven walks with just four strikeouts.

Woodford, 24, pitched in two games out of the pen to date this season, giving up two runs in four frames for a 4.50 ERA.

St. Louis now has seven players on the IL, including five pitchers, three of whom went out on Friday. They are Dakota Hudson, out for the season, Wainwright, Miller, Ponce and Miles Mikolas, along with catcher Yadier Molina and first baseman John Nogowski.
