I will take the over. He knows this is his money year. I am hoping he gets 25-30 solid starts.

I’ll take the over too, but injuries don’t care about money years. That’s why we are shooting in the dark and hoping. It did seem like he was trending in the right direction at the end of the season, and maybe it was good it was the end of the season. That gave him more time to continue rehabbing the shoulder at a reasonable pace without the pressure of the next start in 5 days.

That is true but it seems like guys tend to suddenly get less hurt in their walk year. Maybe just a coincidence.

Some (most?) are definitely more generally motivated in their walk years. For those types, that would incentivize better training and prep, and thus, perhaps fewer injuries?

Odds on Flaherty having a better 2023 than 2024.

Flaherty has made 23 GS over the last two full seasons, a 11.5 GS average, is why I set the line there.

If you are the Cards, do you try to buy lower and offer him an extension now? Or do you wait and see if 2019 Jack is back?

If you are Flaherty, would you take the sure money now or count on a big season ahead to cash in even more next winter?

If he’s willing to take $18 million per year for 4 years right now, then I’m in. But I doubt he will do that. $72 million over 4 years is nice security. But if he has a good or great season, then he will make a lot more. Then again, if he is hurt for half of the season or looks mostly mediocre, he’s likely to make less. That’s always the gamble on these extensions. But I’d rather do that contract if I were the Cardinals than extending Mikolas for 3 or more years. 2 years for Mikolas would be good. But he is going to want longer.

Of course Flaherty thinks it would be ‘awesome’ if the Cardinals would extend him before the start of the season. That way, he gets guaranteed money while he’s recovering from whatever was wrong with his arm in 2022. I thought the Cardinals told him he needed surgery, but Flaherty essentially told them to buzz off.

Hey Mo, don’t let the computer talk you into thinking a guy will be healthier heading into his 30s than he has been in his 20s. Not happnin.

It’s a tough call with Flaherty.

For me, he’s been injured way too much to offer him a big money 4-5 year deal.

However, if he’s the 2019 version in 2023 then he’ll get paid anyway – by someone.

I predict he’s pretty good in 2023 – gets paid – and then is off and on the injured list for the rest of what will be viewed as a very pedestrian, underachieving career.

I would be very very hesitant to extend Flaherty. Offer him a Matz type deal of four years $44M and he can take it or leave it.

What if that offer hurts his feelings? 😉

Oh, I think you can pretty much count on some righteous indignation from Flaherty over any offer that isn’t ‘ace’ level.

I would hate to have to make the decision on him because it will be easy to be wrong no matter what you do with him barring him having a healthy and productive 2023 and then signing a ‘reasonable’ extension.

If he pitches anywhere ‘close to ace-like’ the first half, maybe offer a contract valued for a ‘close to ace like’ who will be able to take a turn maybe half the time that the contract is for. That will elicit a tantrum so Mo can look good offing him before the deadline. Drama cut short, bad contract avoided.

If he was producing like Burnes that might be a factor. He hasn’t been. He has been producing more like Matz.
