I was thinking the Cards would bring in a veteran pitcher to serve as interim closer until Hicks return. , and they still may. There are many in house candidates like Helsley, Fernandez, Miller, Cabrera, Gant, Gallegos, Brebbia. Also Elledge and Whitley enjoyed strong AFL campaigns, but would have to be added to the 40 man roster.
To open Spring Training I would like Fernandez to earn the job. However he could use more AAA seasoning.
Another option would be closer by committee.

ParticipantAs of today and before ST even starts I’d have to think either Gant or Gallegos. Here’s a nice thought how about Cecil winning that spot.
February 9, 2020 at 11:08 am #121820My guess is it will be CMart and I am not thrilled about it at all.
February 9, 2020 at 11:26 am #121824How about the team wins on opening day in a blow out and doesn’t need a closer! 🙂

stlcard25ParticipantI’ll go with either Brebbia or Gallegos.
February 9, 2020 at 2:17 pm #121830I predicted Gallegos over a year ago to be the 2020 closer, I’m sticking with that prediction. Something else to consider, the new 3 batter rule might make the “closer by committee” thing more common, not just with the Cards but all over the league.
Nyquis, I love your Cecil idea so they actually recoup a little of that $30M investment, I would unfortunately put the likely hood of that being less than the chance the Cards trade for Arenado.
The lack of a proven closer doesn’t worry me nearly as much as the lack of more than two proven bats.
Gallegos, CMart/Kim, Helsley, Miller, Gant, Brebbia, Ponce, JFern, Cecil, Reyes, Webb, Cabrera, Woodford and then Mo uses Whitley and Hicks as the big mid season addition. That’s without a doubt the deepest and top to bottom solid bullpen that I ever remember them having. Hopefully they don’t ruin anyone else like they did Gant after over using him due to lack of other dependable options last April and May.

ParticipantIf Martinez makes the rotation, it will be Gallegos.
