I thought I’d give us a break from depressing Covid news by discussing who has to be protected for the upcoming Rule 5 draft.

Unless rules change Carlson, Herrera, Rondon, Oviedo, Elledge, and Torres come to my mind. The Cardinals may gamble with Torres since he has not played full season ball.

Are there any I have forgotten?

I wonder if Elledge would have been protected had the Covid outbreak not happened. Previously, I would have thought rolling the dice and not protecting him would have been the Cardinals decision. But since joining the Cards, he has pitched very well, and secured a spot for the foreseeable future.

Elledge does seem to have solidified his place on the roster. He is one to have clearly benefited from the opportunity presented by all the COVID cases.

Not bad for the 34th ranked prospect on the post draft TCN top 50 list.
