I would not attach players or prospects to move Matz – there is only one year left on his contract, and it is not an albatross, just poor value.

The most money you can eat to move Matz is $5 million, otherwise you are better off trading Fedde. Given the prospect return and the desire to compete sometime after 2025, you are better off moving Fedde, all else equal.

I don’t necessarily disagree with that. It really comes down to Bill DeWitt’s priorities, payroll purging or maximization of prospect return.

The financial reset will continue until next offseason by simple attrition of FA’s-to-be. The only way Bill stops that, is by poor Bill taking on salary.

The trade market is forcing a pause, while Bill tries to appear less desperate, FOR NOW.

Individual trade candidates, should have individual results. Arenado is about the financials, and him not blocking youth. What trade return w/out bundling??

Helsley and Fedde need their value traded back for future service years. Our 25′ departees should be dealt with in a player specific manner, and judging by the magnifying glass Bill is using, they likely are.

It would be nice if they could do both. Like the Dodgers signing Kim, but trading Lux for a draft pick and a prospect.

Yes, and that is why this is a rebuild, not a “reset.” DeWitt isn’t going to start spending money until the fans start coming back.

    What trade return w/out bundling?

Minimal, because the Cardinals have told the world they are only concerned about saving money. So, teams are going to start by offering a low-ranking prospect and minimal relief, and they might be talked into a lower-ranking prospect with more salary relief.

To go along with Brian’s predicted headlines, here were our 2024 BOLD predictions. Some of us weren’t very bold and Shady mostly argued with himself. But for a good laugh, read through our predictions. I guess ZTR probably had the best predictions, although they weren’t exactly Bold. Most of us though, including me, were terrible.

Hopefully the link works as I struggle with links on this site.

If you are still looking for something positive to read about the Cardinals…. this type of story is pretty much what you’ll see. It doesn’t make me feel too good for being a diehard. How did we get to this point?? Is it ever going get get better? The ’30? Its really starting to look that way. Woe is me….. and a lot of others here.

MLB insider destroys Cardinals for uneventful offseason

How low can the St. Louis Cardinals go?

It doesn’t get much worse than the grade handed to them by USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale, who rated all 30 teams’ respective offseasons along with colleague Gabe Lacques.

Here’s what Nightengale wrote about his decision to hand the Cardinals an ‘F-‘ mark.

No trades. No free agent signings. No hope. They’re supposed to be in a rebuild, but they still haven’t been able to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado, after he rejected trades to the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels. They wanted to trade starter Sonny Gray, but he told them he’s not waiving his no-trade clause. And for some reason, All-Star closer Ryan Helsley is still on the team, perhaps believing they’ll get more value for him at the trade deadline. Strange times in St. Louis.”
