There’s a new Judge in town….and his name is Jordan Walker!

Is this what everyone imagined when he was the #1 overall prospect in baseball?

Is he the biggest story to date in MLB?

Is he reminding anyone of ’98 McGwire or ’06 Pujols?

Is anyone holding their breath, hoping this is who he is and not just some cruel trick being played upon Cardinal fans by the almighty baseball gods?

A minor nitpick but was Walker ever #1 overall? I remember him being 4ish in most and peaking at 11 on Fangraphs. But this is what his peak projection was. A guy with 80 grade power. Let’s hope he continues at this pace. The BA I expect to drop but hope he can keep up the BB% where it is and a high HR rate.

Walker not chasing those faders so much has pitchers coming over the plate more and when he gets a meatball he’s centering it. Hopefully the swing discipline and the eye will hold up. Without any kind of a threat hitting behind him, at some point he will get less to hit.

I’m old and my memory is faulty…but…I seem to remember some group ranking him #1. But hey…#1 or #4 or #10…I think the consensus this is what scouts believed he would become. It’s been fun to watch, yes?

I am very happy for Walker and his breakout. By all accounts, he’s a good kid from a good family, so it is nice to see him having a year that might live up to his potential.

Coming into 2023, his peak, Walker was ranked between second (Baseball Prospectus) and fifth among MLB prospects by all the major raters, with two exceptions. Fangraphs ranked him 12th and ESPN 14th. I didn’t see any no. 1 votes, but he was very close!

It’s a huge if, but if Walker can keep raking, and Baez proves himself at AAA, our outfield may be much better than expected sometime soon. It also could pave the way to trade Nootbaar.

Lots of “ifs”…but if Walker is for real…if Baez is for real…and if Blaze Jordan & Crooks keep raking…well…Card’s may have something as they move towards 2027.
