On the other hand, media will be in the pressbox and photographers will be around. So if anything out of the ordinary happens, it will be reported. It just may not be live on TV. Those who want to take issue will find a way.
Brian is right. We never see first pitch or national anthem. That is ad time for FS-Midwest. Just hope they don’t do what the NFL is planning on regarding the anthem.
Hate to say this, but media show stay away from it. Players will look for attention if they know it will eventually be shown.
Professional athletes getting involved with social or political causes is nothing new. It happens frequently in the NBA and NFL so it shouldn’t be surprising that MLB players do it. And Flaherty certainly isn’t the only baseball player doing it. How fans react will be interesting but I wouldn’t expect a harsh backlash unless he really crosses a line.
As for how the organization reacts I would agree with Brian. If the Cardinals ever part ways with Flaherty it will probably be over money instead of politics. The exception would be if he ever directly criticizes the organization. That is what got Tommy Pham into trouble.
Brian, I know you love baseball history so I am going to give you the suggestion of writing an article on what baseball was like during the Spanish flu. Particularly would be interested if it has any unique Cardinals angles.
It would be a very short story, indeed. I did a quick check of multiple reference books and saw no mention of the flu. The 1918 season ended early because of WWI. They were 33 games out. The 1919 schedule was shortened across MLB due to expected poor attendance. The Cards finished 40 1/2 games out of first.
