“ I was also reminded that Thigpen suffered a serious injury long after he retired from baseball as he tripped and fell down a flight of stairs as he was leaving an NHL Stanley Cup playoff game”

This is not for the faint of heart – but one time leaving a Rockies game some 10 years ago I saw a lady do the same thing. She tripped and fell going down the stairs as we were exiting a game. Fortunately not a life threatening thing, but she broke her ankle and you could see the bone sticking out. She was a trooper and handling it pretty good, just waiting for medical personnel to get there. Still it was tough to see.

Oh, and speaking of the Stanley Cup, after our game last night I was over to ABC as the Panthers won their first cup. That was some series. Edmonton rose from 0-3 in games to force a 7th game, and gave Florida all they could handle losing the finale 2-1. They had some chances to score a couple late, but just could not quite get ‘er done.

I would have taken Edmonton in that Game 7 if I were a hockey betting man, BicycleMike. I would love to see the numbers for all Game 7’s for professional basketball, baseball and hockey where one team was attempting to win the final 4 games. The momentum would be so in favor of the team that had lost the first 3 games and then came storming back. I would bet that around 75% of these Game 7’s would be won by the team whom lost the first 3 games, no matter where the final game was played.

It’s dry out here a little west of the ballpark, but it’s cloudy and I can hear distant thunder. I didn’t think there’d be any problem starting the game on time, but I sure missed the call on this one. At any rate, I don’t expect the farmer’s almanac to be asking 1TD for any of his input anytime soon…Haha!

Even Wade Boggs swung and missed every now and then, TD. You would have made a great meteorologist…..and maybe even a dandy professional leftfielder if you had really set your mind to it at an early age.

Although the volume’s muted I’m occasionally looking up at the TV watching some of these past highlights being shown during the rain delay. I happened to get a glimpse one clip in which I noticed Lance Berkman as one of the many Cardinal players mobbing Nick Punto at HP as he scored the winning run on a walk off base hit. It reminded me that of all the hitters that tormented me for what seemed like forever, Lance Berkman turned out to be one of my all time favorite Cardinal players despite being a Redbird for only a short time. You couldn’t help but to like his smile and style of play and that base hit that he had in extras in game 6 was as big as any hit in that epic WS game. Berky could flat out rip the baseball all over the field of play and I sure am glad I got to see him play for a couple of seasons wearing the birds on the bat.

I sure don’t, Rats. It’s not raining at our house, but it looks like little squalls are boiling up around the river in the downtown area near the ballpark which is not uncommon, so it wouldn’t surprise me too much if they decide to try to play two tomorrow.

The Doppler Radar shows a big pile of green stuff just NW of St. Louis. Like 1td I suspect this one might be postponed and a day/nighter DH tomorrow.

Cubs about to start out west in San Francisco at Candlestick Park.

UPDATE: I see now that this one has indeed been postponed.

    Reds still way behind.

Cubs and Giants about to get under way.

Is that at Crosley or Riverfront, Rat?

6 games in 5 days. We will need someone else to make a start or have a bullpen game. What are the rules on a player being sent down and being called back up to be the 27th man? I know typically there are a certain amount of days before you can call a player back up. But if we can use Kloff for the 27th man on the double header, it may make sense to start him tomorrow. It will have been 6 days since he pitched 1 inning and he obviously is built up with a SP workload.

EDIT: Disregard I see he pitched for Memphis tonight unfortunately. Maybe Thompson gets a start tomorrow or they go to Libby, but Libby isn’t built up for more than 50 pitches.

Albert – No rules on 27th man. Anyone can come up. But yeah, Kloff pitched last night so it won’t be him. Most likely Robertson.

Thanks for that information. I’m off today so I get to see the day game. When I was way younger I kept up on everything baseball. I knew every player on every team and their stats. I was up on all the rules etc. I need to work fulltime thru Feb. When I retire I look forward to a lot more bicycle riding, fishing, and most of all catching up on my baseball knowledge outside of just the Cardinals.

The Cardinals have a few options. They haven’t announced a starter for game 2. It seems most likely they would start their normal Tuesday scheduled starter and bring up an extra reliever – likely Loutos or Robertson. But they could decide to call up Graceffo since it’s about his turn in the Memphis rotation for the later game. They need to add him to the 40-man at some point by season’s end anyway and he’s been pitching better. That might make the most sense to cover innings. Just a thought. That would push our other starters back a game and we wouldn’t have to worry about covering Sunday. Of course, Kloffenstein could be brought up to start Sunday’s game as another option, but then we would have to option a reliever.

Memphis shuttling a reliever is painless.

Looking at the scheduling closer and pitchers days off, they probably do call up a RP for today. They can then go until Sunday with the typical rotation in 5 days rest. Sunday Kloff would be on normal rest or they may feel more comfortable going with a BP game right before the scheduled off day.

Graceffo makes sense to me. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s en route as we speak.

On a good note……the Cubs lost again late last night at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. 5-1 Giants your happy final. It was 2-1 heading to the last of the 8th and the El Gigantes plated three runs to break it open.

They play again tonight in San Francisco. Me and Whitey Herdog are looking forward to being on the couch for another Cub loss.

And I will miss the afternoon game today. I have to go see about a new water heater and then it will be time to head to the Gasthof for my usual weekly feast.

Bases juiced on two walks sandwiched around a liner. Nobody out. Looks like Gibson is going to have to find a way to walk the tightrope here.

That’s a shame. Made a pitch and still got burned.
