I’m one of Gorman’s most loyal proponents, but when he gets lost, he ends up a thousand miles from nowhere. He’s 1 for his last 20 with 9 K’s. His 1 hit was a tater, but that won’t sustain a K rate near to 50 pct.

I would keep Carlson in there for now. Looks like he is finally progressing to where he was before the collision.
Pages looks good on “D”. Just sneaked a ball into the basket as well. Funny as it looked like Wisdom hit the ball much harder, yet his was knocked down by the wind and Pedro’s just got to the bucket.
Yeah, mudville pointed out Carlson’s recent success. I noticed an improvement, but wasn’t aware of the 7 for 19 stretch. Have to leave him in there and I still think he’s the best mitt the Cardinals have in the OF.
This is Gorman’s 3rd year in the big leagues and still all he does is strikeout. And yes, I know, he’s got power, he hits it a long way, he hits the occasional homerun. But the huge strikeout totals just sort of negate any of his positives.
And yes, at this point, Goldschmidt is just about in the same boat.
I hope not, but it’s possible, Bling. I think Gorman’s bat generates a lot more power than did DeJong’s, but it won’t matter if he doesn’t begin to make some more contact. I’m not sure 30 HR’s will sustain the sort of K rate he sometimes displays.
Edit…I just looked and DeJong has 13 HR’s this season.
Among other things, I am concerned that Gorman’s BABiP has dropped each year, similar to what happened to DeJong his first three seasons. DeJong hit 30 dongs his 3rd year, but the decreasing quality and quantity of contact caught up with him.
I don’t think of them as at all the same but I can see why they could be compared. They both transitioned to a new middle infield position after coming up as a third baseman. They both hit homers and strike out a lot. They’ve also both tended to be quite streaky. Gorman is just so much more powerful though. He could have a season with 40 home runs. Maybe not as a Cardinal playing at Busch, but we’ll see.
I agree there are significant differences between tham as players, the greater power chief among them. I am beginning to fear their careers will follow the same path due to a multi-year pattern of decreasing quantity and quality of contact.
Good eye, Shady. I was thinking along those same lines when Kyle was still in there after the 5th inning today. He’s been every bit as effective as Gray. He’s taken 2 more turns than Sonny and has a total workload of 83.2 IP’ed which is 15 more innings of work than Gray. I love to poke fun at Johnny, but all 3 off-season SP’er aquisitions have thus far been better than I would have ever expected. Even the Bavarian Bismark annihilator has been effective…Haha!
I liked Fernandez getting the 8th in a 1 run game. He has been pitching very well and I like the gradual increase in leverage. Giving him the opportunity late in a close game is going to increase his confidence and I see him being a late inning RP for this team in the future.
Yeah, he did good despite getting shafted by the HPU on a 1-2 ball/strike call to Amaya, but he still got the GB and the FC out at HP which obviously turned out to be better than the K.
Does anyone else think Gorman is showing signs of following a DeJong career trajectory?
No because he can actually maintain an .800 ops due to him being extremely streaky and his 35 home run potential and walks a little bit more.

I think people forget the hitter DeJong was his first few seasons. When he hit 30 his 3rd year he was talked about as having 35 HR power. His OPS topped out at .857 in 2017. Gorman posted .805 last year.
One difference was that DeJong’s HR production did not stand out because he was surrounded by better hitters that matched is home run production. Goldschmidt, Ozuna, Carpenter, Molina were all hitting homers at about the 30 clip.
