Injury updates: Steven Matz, Giovanny Gallegos, and Riley O’Brien will all throw for Springfield (Tuesday) in their respective rehab games,” Woo said. “Tommy Edman will take BP on the field (Tuesday) with the team for the first time.”

That report is partially incorrect or at least poorly worded. O’Brien is not ready for game action. He faced live hitters in a workout with Springfield. Matz and Gallegos pitched in Tuesday’s game (see yesterday’s Notebook on our home page), but I heard Gallegos left the team right after. So maybe he is ready to be activated by StL soon or perhaps the docs just wanted to look him over…

At this point do we think they will learn from past experience that if we use Matz as a starter he is going to injure himself and just use him out of the bullpen OR do we think he is going to be the 5th starter?

He’ll be the fifth starter unless/until they acquire someone else at the deadline perhaps. But that assumes everyone else stays healthy and effective. A lot can change in six weeks.

Hopefully Gallegos will be better than he was, but he has a contract so we will see plenty of him regardless.

Matz may actually be an improvement over what we have as a #5. May is the key though. He has had stretches where he pitches like a #3, and then gets hurt or falls off a cliff performance wise.

Edman coming back will be a good help. As much as I like Siani, Edman will be an improvement over Siani in the starting lineup. When Edman is back, Fermin will likely be sent down. Fermin at least has options and stays in the org while Crawford would have to be released. Less depth in the org.

The lineup algo, excuse me I mean Marmol, is getting comfortable with Burleson manning the outfield. He could play Carlson all the time but he doesn’t, so he must think Burleson’s bat compensates for his glove. That’s an interesting turn of the worm looking ahead to when guys return from the IL and AAA.

Family coming in today from Austin for a month-long visit and grand-children begging a first din-din of Pappy CiF’s world famous spinach quiche. I’ll happily comply and top it off with Madame CiF’s colorful mixed salad and delicious vinaigrette. Dessert will be a simple fruit salad. Rah Cardinals!

Matz is here again in 2025. Might as well call it in the Gibson / Lynn salary range, but Matz is guaranteed.

Lets start Matz now, try to get him tradable, and piggy w/Andre or Libby. I’d like to see Matz off the 25′ books.

BDW is going to be buying at least 4 starting pitchers for a few years. Maybe he can fill the 5 slot and 6-7 from trades and home growns. I said maybe. Libby, Thompson and Pallante can handle 6-7 duty like this year until they are out of options. I do not hold out much hope for the recent AAA additions/arrivals.

Bling, your overwhelming negativity always puts a smile on my face – like literally. I’ve actually grown to appreciate that every day the sun will rise, my dog will be excited to wake up with me and wag her tail, and Blingboy will post an absurdly biased opinion against anything Cardinals.

CF: Edman / Siani / Carlson (Scott)

    LF/RF: Noot / Burly / Donovan (Walker)

    DH: Donovan

I’d need Edman to return before touching CF.
Noot returning doesn’t bench Burly, just moves Donny to DH.
Willsons return enables Herrera to DH vs lefties.
Evidently Siani ranks over Carlson, but Carlson needs PA’s now, to get tradable before an Edman return.

Looks like the cavalry in the person of Matz and Gallegos are on the way to save us.

I am a broken record on this, but when Siani leads off I would have him try bunting for a hit quite often.

I get the sense our coaching staff is not real engaged in looking at how to best take advantage of the players abilities.

Man alive…A triple from Winn as he shows off the nice power to weight acceleration as he motored around the bases. That throw into 3B almost got away and may have allowed the rookie to score.

Burly with a wild swing to K and leave Winn on 3rd. Wow.

Goldschmidt with the 2 run tater! That baseball may not clear the CF wall if not for the hot weather today. I’ll take it.

Burly fail w/runner on 3rd, less than two outs.

Oppo triple for Winn, who now leads ops+ of our active players.

Goldy tater. Just what he needs, some thump.

Burly swung through that 0-2 pitch when he should have tried to go the opposite way on it. Still not a good pitch to hit being up and away. Goldy got the same pitch he took on 0-1 and deposited into the right center field seats. Nice work.

I suppose now that Goldschmidt has hit a dong in this one the Redbird announcers are talking about how he’s getting locked in, turning the corner, and about to go on a tear. Right?

How many times have I heard that this year…….

What a huge difference when Goldy produces.

Lance gets amped up after the swinging K for the 3rd out in the 4th. I don’t blame him. The old guy ought to flex a little bit after overpowering the youngsters with the fastball…Haha!
