Looks like it’s back to a 5 way tie for the final NLWC although there’s a pct. pt. discrepancy

I am starting to like the idea of a bunch of sub .500 teams in the playoffs to show the absurdity of the playoff expansion.

…..that list of ‘23 draftees is not exactly showing a lot of hope for the future on the offensive side.

Pretty disastrous, as most of the drafts have been under Flores.

Yeah, me too, LA. It could be something similar to the NIT…aka the Nobody’s Interested Tournament.

On the one knee catching thing, I recently read an article about Knizner’s defensive metrics (specifically framing, I think) improving this year. (He still can’t hit though.) A factor mentioned was him now catching with one knee down all the time. I don’t have the link handy, but I thought it was interesting…

I can remember there being conversation about it when Pena came to town and it was first seen here by a Cardinal catcher. His explanation was to get the target lower, and I guess to get the low strike calls. But he would not be on a knee whenever a runner was on. Even with nobody on though, it would still potentially matter when there is the possibility of the third strike getting loose and the chance of a pop up that he couldn’t quite get to, giving them an extra out.

Whenever robo strike zone calls comes into MLB, I wonder if catchers will give it up or not. The benefit on a lower target will still exist, along with all the negatives.

BA has done many articles on knee down. Each season they chart the % of catchers using it. They have 68% league wide.

Some of the best CS rates are from knee down guys. We have Willson and Ivan both knee down and their rates are polar opposites.

Athletic talent has always driven who can, and who can’t use the knee down stance, and the players just keep getting more talanted.

I like how Andre is using the fastball up and in to righties. For me, COL has middling righty bats and Tovar. Good matchup for Andre, and he limited their lefty stars, as we’ve seen from him.

Yes, really Colorado was kind of a perfect opponent for Pallante.

I like Andre – probably a lot more than lots of folks on here. I also think he’s a lot better off being a starting pitcher due to his batted ball results. But he still has a lot to figure out to be effective. The good news is they are tinkering with him a LOT to try new approaches. It also helped that he had vastly more control this last time out instead of overthrowing everything across his body like the last time.

You can’t spin off and command the inside well, not consistently, right? So pitching inside helps tunnel his command thru the plate.

Question for me is whether better righties do more with his inside pitches.

I’m worried about the same thing. Part of his effectiveness against the Reds and Rockies was because they were mostly just not good hitters. He left a fair amount over the middle of the plate – more so against the Reds. He also just looked completely discombobulated against the Astros who have some very good hitters.

Matz has made one rehab start right? So Andre should get at least two more starts before he starts competing with Matz salary. I bet he can’t wait to get back on the mound 😀

It’s a good opportunity, just like Thompson had earlier.

Correct. Matz just went two innings in his first one so yeah, probably 2 more to go. I’m not sure the organization is sold on Matz starting. But he will for now unless a better option comes along. Pallante could be the better option, but I’m not betting on him being ready to usurp Matz quite yet.

When you listen to Mo’s comments both past and present my take (reading between the lines) is that they are looking for the following:

    1) Robberse or Thompson to become more consistent so they enter the conversation.

    2) Graceffo to become more consistent as a starter but they are getting really close to playing the reliever card on him.

    3) They have no idea what to do with McGreevey. Even with his good run last season at AAA they have no confidence in him getting major league hitters out. So I think the idea is that he’s going to take a long time to develop pinpoint command.

    4) They don’t want to rush Hence’s development.

Well, Matz can’t get righties out either, so he can join Thompson, Libby and Pallante in that bucket. Must be a SP5/6 thing.

Can any of them boys you listed get filthy vs righties?

Hence and Graceffo probably. I haven’t looked at the numbers but I’m guessing Graceffo tends to have the opposite problem.

But he still has a lot to figure out to be effective.

As expected of a pitcher who didn’t spend a year+ in AAA figuring stuff out before coming up to MLB.
