There are 3 things I always liked about Pages watching him in the minors. He plays excellent defense with a good arm. He is a leader on the field – he’s like a general out there directing what is supposed to happen. And the last thing is that while he’s not a good hitter at all, he always seems to find a way to get guys moved over with sacrifices or getting one big hit when it’s needed most. He was always amongst my favorites in the minors for these reasons.
Unless I am mistaken, Pages plays with his knee on the ground rather than in a crouch. Even with runners on, and even with runners in scoring position. That can work and look good in the minors. It doesn’t work in the bigs. I have seen a video clip with commentary from the booth,from earlier where, a ball got past him and a runner scored from third. The commentary was to the effect his ability to move and block is diminished and his ability to go after it is slowed, due to being down like that. If I am mixed up and thinking of someone else, sorry and never mind.
(As a youngster I played catcher enough to know for sure spending the game in a crouch in no fun. There is no way catchers would do it that way for 100 years without good reason.)
Not really a big surprise with all the opposing traffic on the basepaths, but the Cardinals rank 4th in turning double plays. They’ve also only been victimized 25 times by GIDP’s. No other team in the Big Leagues has grounded into less double plays.
Addendum: There have always been catchers around who would play like that with the bases empty. Fernando Vina, I think, comes to mind.
Addendum, no not Vina. Tony Pena. I am getting soft in the head.
Winn’s delivered all season long and if he continues to do so I don’t know how he can’t be given serious consideration for NL ROY.
Winn doubles the lead w/a 2out single, after Sinai’s sacrifice bunt moves both runners, and Pages into scoring position.
I think it was more bad hitting today than good pitching from Pallante. It was interesting that Colorado kept as many lefties out there against him since the book on Pallante is that right handers shell him. He was good enough though and the results in the end look great.
The last StL starter to record 5 scoreless IP was Pallante on May 29th, when he went 6 scoreless, two turns ago.
With this warm-fuzzy game I guess I should mention I enjoyed some good old spaghetti bolognaise for din-din with a crispy green salad and finished with a lovely slice of chocolate-raspberry cake from the local village patisserie. Yum!
If anyone needs a pick me up, Waldrup, the starter the Braves took a few picks after Davis, made his debut and was rocked for 7 ER in 3.2 IP. I feel 1% better about Flores now.
JJ – Excellent idea. Then you could claim how you scouted Pallante and knew he’d be good – even when he’s sometimes not.

Not a whole lot better in the AL, with only 6 teams above .500. I guess MLB thought an abundance of second rate teams would attract more baseball fans.
Looks like it’s back to a 5 way tie for the final NLWC although there’s a pct. pt. discrepancy…Is that something that’s reviewable?
A crisp 2:15 game. Pallante with a good game, so next time he will be shelled. Maybe skipping the next start will work.
Seems like Benny Santiago was the first catcher I recall that crouched way down with a knee or leg on the ground. But maybe it was Tony Peña.
…..that list of ‘23 draftees is not exactly showing a lot of hope for the future on the offensive side.
