May 6, 2024 at 8:31 pm #251066Wonder if Ollie will stick with Fermin against the righty tomorrow? He’s been a bit of a spark this evening.
This Mets bullpen will be tough to put a run against.
May 6, 2024 at 8:35 pm #251067Nootbaar with a hit! Don’t say that too often.
May 6, 2024 at 8:51 pm #251070We got the big bats up here in the 8th

jj-cf-stlParticipantOne more time through the lineup.
May 6, 2024 at 8:52 pm #251072Ottavino still pitching. He was another guy that I think we simply let go, and it was puzzling at the time.
May 6, 2024 at 9:13 pm #251073Another 3 run game and another “L”. With the Pittsburgh win we sink a little deeper in the basement, although Milwaukee lost and Chicago is losing.

jj-cf-stlParticipantAnd they went quietly into the night.

ParticipantWell I’m glad I didn’t watch the game tonight but the seasons starting up again and I’ve been waiting. So I really see no improvement in the field over last year really. Outfields an unknown entity. Nobody can bat their weight. Both corner high dollars off to pitiful starts. Geez looks just like last year. There is improvement in the pitching though!! Used properly that in itself can be an advantage. So how do we manage to squeeze out 4 runs a game rather than 3? I know how-hit the d–m ball or hit the highway! Geez! Its not rocket science. Glad to see the ole forum crowd is still kicking and I will be adding my asstute observations the rest of the way this season. We’ll get em tomorrow!

You’re right, BikeMike, they just released him more or less.
Someone please correct me if I’m mistaken but I think the way things unfolded, the Cards tried to convince Adam O. to switch from starting to relieving, following his extremely disappointing AAA season in 2011 (ERA around 5.00). The way I remember it is that Adam basically refused to listen, so the Bird braintrust got rid of him.Of course, Colorado scooped him up, told him he was in fact now a relief pitcher, and to his and Colorado’s credit he’s flourished in that role for more than a decade. (A sparkling 3.24 ERA while logging the third-most innings of any reliever from 2012-present, behind only Kenley Jansen and Bryan Shaw.)
Maybe Ottavino was intransigent — even insubordinate — but it still feels a bit like just one more example of front office mis-management over the past dozen years or so. It ain’t easy sometimes, but getting the most from your players frequently means convincing them to accept and eventually excel within a different role than they’d prefer. The Cards failed at that.
Anyway that’s how I remember it, Mike.
May 7, 2024 at 9:42 am #251100I recall a similar situation with Ottavino. He was originally a starter, and I was thinking we would be the first team in history to have two “Adam’s” in our rotation.
Then it seems they wanted him to work out of the bullpen and before long he was let go. It seemed odd at the time as he had flashes of dominant stuff. It struck me as yet another example of the organization making a transaction based on non-baseball related reasons.
