If you take Sonny Gray’s numbers out of the equation (along with all the top starter from every other team) I wonder if our 2-5 still stacks up at #20 or if they drop some…
April 22, 2024 at 9:54 am #249068Could it be nobody wants to play for this manager?

jj-cf-stlParticipantYep LACF, I saw where Thompson had a relief appearance after running away from home for 10 days.
His usage / role has confused me since Gray returned. I guess it’s still evolving 🙂

jj-cf-stlParticipantPer the game thread, I wanted Thompson as the piggyback to Matz in game #19, but Oli sent Matz back out on a suicide mission, with a one run lead. Not hindsight.
Oli’s gutless managing in game #19 has now blossomed into a 4 game losing streak, but he earned it.
He had his SP6 in the pen, who hadn’t pitched in 7 days, available, and he warmed no-one for Matz vs their 3rd time through the order.
“be patient” – Mo deserves the boos.

Ollie does not appear to be anything special as far as a manager, and his decisions are often questionable. In addition, he makes odd comments – he does not seem to be real comfortable with the press.
But we really do not know the dynamics of the clubhouse and how the players look at the manager. Mo has said the players like him and he is good with motivating the guys. During last year’s fiasco Mo said Ollie was doing an “amazing” job.
Sounds like a stretch at the least, and delusional at the most but you would think he would know. Ollie would certainly look better as a manager if we were scoring more runs. But I don’t think a younger manager is right for this club. Of the three rookie managers we have had in the last 10 years or so, Shildt was the guy I felt did the best job.
I just think our organization from management on down is dysfunctional. They got along well for quite a few years going year by year getting a couple of guys to keep them competitive. Now they have fallen back, the farm system has not generated an impact player that management has not traded away, and the team’s older players are in decline.
If we are still in this quagmire by mid June, then they need to seriously look at longer term rebuild. Do like they used to say in the ’60s, “never trust anyone over 30.” Move all of the older guys and stock up on potential and future value.
April 22, 2024 at 10:48 am #249072There seem to be a lot of people in St. Louis just sitting around “hoping,” when what’s needed is a few more (quite a few actually) “doing.” As if we just need to wait a little longer and things will eventually get better.

jj-cf-stlParticipantIt looks like the org has Zack Thompson on the Jake Woodford career path. Odd way to manage first round assets.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI hope Libby can outlast this managemant group, but I have my doubts. He may be next in line.
When it comes to clearly defined roles for future core players, our management in place lacks backbone in their decisions.
They do make decisions like Thompson as SP6 that are sound, but then they bail on it in a waaaaay too knee-jerk manner. Come on, stand your ground every once in a while. Roles matter.
April 22, 2024 at 11:22 am #249079Thompsons development path was probably fubared when they beamed him over AA and let him get his head handed to him that whole season.

They may not but that is still a lame excuse for poor performance. There are alot of people in the world who don’t like or are not inspired by their boss but they still do their **** job. And these players are getting paid a fortune and are supposed to be professional. Cry me a river.
I don’t think Marmol should have ever been named manager. It should have been Skip or Stubby. But there is no need crying over it now. Mo and the front office made their decision then doubled down on it with an extension. The players are just going to have to suck it up and get to work.

Correction, gscottar, Shildt never should have been fired.
April 22, 2024 at 1:31 pm #249089There’s no doubt that the whiz-kid Cardinal manager frequently seems to be genuinely confused or bewildered and is currently occupying a position of which he doesn’t possess the experience or skills necessary to properly cope with the challenges presented to a Big League manager. However, it’s my view that his primary problem is that he talks…I happen to believe that if he were to not say anthing, that simple act would add 3 or 4 W’s a month to his managerial record.
April 22, 2024 at 1:36 pm #249090He does say some dumb stuff. Management has made three head scratching decisions concerning the field manager in the last few years, firing Shildt, hiring Marmol, extending Marmol.
Most of us armchair GM’s would not done any of those.
April 22, 2024 at 1:47 pm #249092@blackhillscards wrote”Shildt never should have been fired.”
Totally correct. Whatever the ‘difference’ was in philosophy: time has proven that Shildt was on the right side. His teams were fundamentally sound and the players were engaged. He may never win another MOY or playoff game, but he read the team and maximized it’s potential. The STEEP decline began then. He likely knew what the organization needed to progress, and they didn’t want to respond. Here we are.
April 22, 2024 at 1:50 pm #249093Yes, he does. And it’s clearly visible to me that as soon as he says it, he’s aware that he just said something really dumb, at which point he immediately takes on very distinct facial features that could well be termed as the dumb look…His eyes become a bit crossed up and his head seem to get a bit larger as if it were being inflated with air…

dblackParticipantNot sure what thread to share this information but here is my math with Milwaukee at 14-6 with 142 to play and the Cards are 9-13 with 140 to play. If the Brewers play .500 baseball (71-71) the rest of the year their record would be (85-77). The Cards would have to go (77-63) in their last 140 to be (86-76). If Milwaukee were to win 5 more games than this scenario the Cards would have to go (82-58) just to pass the Brewers. And this is just to catch one team above you. Hoping for the best…
April 22, 2024 at 2:18 pm #249096Yep. The games in April count the same as September. There aren’t any throw aways.
April 22, 2024 at 2:22 pm #249097Correction, gscottar, Shildt never should have been fired.
I agree with that. Mo then compunded one mistake by making another one. I see a trend here.
April 22, 2024 at 2:57 pm #249103Catch Milwaukee? The Cardinals can’t even climb out of last place to catch the Pirates and they’ve lost 6 in a row.
April 22, 2024 at 3:34 pm #249105Well with all the time the Cards have spent decorating the NL central basement I think the Pirates need to try a little harder to kick us out.

ParticipantMight as well add Denny Green to the mix: “The Cardinals are who we thought they were!”

Ironically I posted a reference to that on the member board earlier today.
