They were 10 games off the pace on May 1st of ’23 and the season was effectively over and done. They’ll be 5 games off the pace when this game ends. There’s a decent chance this season could be in the fire by the first week in May. I’ll repeat that this may indeed be the worst stretch of Cardinal baseball of my lifetime.
April 20, 2024 at 3:34 pm #248843I had an errand and it was 5-4 and now its 10-4. Yikes. What are the odds our offense digs us out of this hole? Nothing good ever comes of a short start.
April 20, 2024 at 3:36 pm #248844Goldschmidt watches strike three go by “right down central” as Mike Shannon used to say. Jeez, doesn’t anyone care on this club?
April 20, 2024 at 3:36 pm #248845But the new deck chairs Mo picked up over the winter are lovely.
April 20, 2024 at 3:37 pm #248846It wasn’t just short. He was slapped around for 3 taters and 5 ER’s in 4.2.
April 20, 2024 at 3:45 pm #248847He’s young, he’ll get better. Wait. It’s early, he’s working on stuff.
April 20, 2024 at 3:47 pm #248848Ironically the last Cardinal club I recall that was going this bad was the 1990 team that Whitey quit on – or the club quit on him. Whitey said we were getting thumped one day and he looked down the bench and a couple of guys were laughing it up. He said right there he had had it and quit the next day.
Well one positive if this things continues to tank, management can’t dodge the issue with stuff like “getting rid of the bad apples” and “we need to bring in better leadership”.
With professional baseball it comes down to better players number one, and a good manager who knows how best to utilize the roster number two. Right now we have neither. or at least not enough of the first and we certainly don’t have the second.
April 20, 2024 at 3:50 pm #248849Is it me or does it seem like nobody mentions that Winn makes some throwing errors? It seems like several and its still April.

ParticipantSeems like a rough game today. I had to give up my sports channels as my cable bill was getting out of hand. So I won’t be able to see many games this year but in the end cardinal management made it an easier decision this year by not really trying in my opinion. Still miss watching the games and chiming in on here. Maybe they can make a big comeback.
April 20, 2024 at 3:54 pm #248851Winn does lead the team with what looks to be four errors now. So, he’s committing an error every 5 games.
That will be a massive tally at the end of the year.
April 20, 2024 at 4:00 pm #248852He also is about one of 2-3 people on the team that can at least look capable of getting a hit.

ParticipantBicyclemike I have to agree with you. Far as the whitey thing. From what I’ve cleaned, whitey really hated that baseball had become more a numbers thing than a team game. Guys were chasing stats cause that seemed to get better contracts and they didn’t want to do the little things anymore. That era kind of coincided with steroids as well so kind of makes sense. It’s why I don’t like the analytic side of things. I think guys that can slap hit, bunt effectively, run smartly, etc are just as valuable maybe Moreso than the big number guys. I still believe that you could put a team like whitey did out there and win but but the players have to believe they will get compensated for it otherwise they won’t buy in.
April 20, 2024 at 4:04 pm #248855Can anybody say what the crowd actually in the stands looks like today?
April 20, 2024 at 4:05 pm #2488561TD definitely the worst Cardinal team I have ever seen the last 2 years! I’m gonna take a week or so off! This team is simply not worth watching! See y’all in May! Maybe! Lol!

April 20, 2024 at 4:11 pm #248858Pallante’s death ball hasn’t scared anyone yet this year except Cardinal fans. Oh well, I guess it was a fun article to write in the middle of January for some beat writer.
April 20, 2024 at 4:16 pm #248860On a brighter note the Marlins hit a 2 run HR in the 9th to beat the Cubs 3-2 at Wrigley.
April 20, 2024 at 4:18 pm #248861Bill and MO killed the Golden goose? Looks like it. I can’t imagine the fan base returning in droves like they did this year if they continue on the current trajectory. Of course Bill would suddenly decide its time to clean house. That would save a fee clicks of the turnstiles.
April 20, 2024 at 4:18 pm #248862My God I wish I had never seen this tweet
That base hit by Siani is the first single by a Cardinals center fielder this season to reach the outfield.

April 20, 2024 at 4:20 pm #248864Burleson needs to be in the lineup, somewhere, against RHP. He’s been taking very competitive ABs , lately. Something the Cardinals sorely need.
April 20, 2024 at 4:26 pm #248865Here are the ERA’s of the four pitchers the Cardinals used today:
Mikolas 6.49
Thompson 6.91
Gallegos 5.40
Pallante 6.30Combine that with half of the lineup hitting under .200 and you have a bad situation.
April 20, 2024 at 4:32 pm #248866Wow. Only 21 games to get a hit into the outfield.
April 20, 2024 at 4:34 pm #248867The early returns on this team don’t look promising for sure.
So, even when they get Edman and Carlson back and you can get rid of Scott and Siani – what does that get you?
The way Walker, Gorman, and Goldschmidt are going and even Donovan and Nootbar are hitting under .230.
Outside of Gray and Lynn (somewhat) the starting pitching is spotty and inconsistent.
I mean – it’s starting to look like playing .500 baseball is the ceiling for this team so by the time they manage to get healthy (assuming no one else gets injured) then another 70-75 win season may be just about all you can expect.
April 20, 2024 at 5:03 pm #248877A well-deserved defeat.
April 20, 2024 at 5:58 pm #248884I’m skeptical Edman is close to playing.
