Wrapping it up with a highly anticipated weekend series against the arch rival Giants.
The Giants are certainly rivals, but the dreaded cubbies are our “arch” kind of rivals, Blingster. I think our top 5 rivals are as follows:
1. Chicago cubs
2. Cincinnati Reds
3. Milwaukee Brewers
4. Los Angeles Dodgers
5. San Francisco GiantsGreat din-din, Cardinal in France! But I’m not sure what to make of your gazelle horns. Since this is our last Friday game thread of 2024, I think it would be a nice touch if we had a bunch of posters indulging in a steaming hot plate of delicious catfish fiddlers. I’m having them……oh boy am I having them. I’m doubling up on my usual order of the fiddlers. Now if you can’t get your mitts on fiddlers, any catfish variety would work. So come one and come all and step up to the catfish fiddler plate.
Been wanting to ask this for a while. What exactly is a catfish fiddler? I’m in central Oklahoma and have eaten my fair share of fried catfish fillets and catfish nuggets but have never heard of catfish fiddlers or ever seen them on a restaurant menu. Are these a regional thing? Just curious.
BTW – will be having waffles smothered in butter and syrup for dinner.The fiddlers are the whole fish, except for the guts and head, osuagec. Much more flavorful than your basic catfish filet……but both a great. Your waffles smothered in butter and syrup make for a wonderful din-din. I’d add some all beef sausages too.
I’ll always place the NY Mets at or near the top of not only the most heated rivalry, but also as a team I absolutely detest.

And with the hurricane dumping a bunch of rain and wind on us today here in SW Indiana there will be no CCFF. That’s Cardinals Catfish Fiddler Friday. Hate to miss the last one of the year but I can’t control the weather.
And it looks like Augusta National Golf Club got hammered by Hurricane Helene. The Masters might look different next year.

We have a supply of wonderful Palisade peaches on hand, so will indulge on one of those for desert. Already had one earlier today as well after a bike ride.
Well unfortunately I saw an article today that the Cardinals are expected to keep Marmol as manager in 2025. We may know for sure next week.
Catfish Fiddlers & Gazelle Horns……a meal truly fit for a king.

What did you have instead? Some nice baked Salmon, rice pilaf, fresh green beans followed by some gelato for dessert? Lol

Pugs has it pretty good on our rivals. The Cubs are always the chief rival. Others depend on the era. The Dodgers were probably our main rival in the ‘40s and ‘60s. It was us or the Dodgers grabbing the pennant most years in those times.
In the ‘80s it was the Mets. For awhile in the early 2000s it was Houston. The 2000-teens was the Giants for awhile. Lately Milwaukee, and to some degree Cincinnati.
Unfortunately the last two years it is the Cubs only, and for pride, not a pennant or even post season berth.
PS – The enchiladas were great, but I added a roasted chile along with the Spanish rice on the side. Even though we diced chiles into the enchiladas, I put another one on the side. The chile was much hotter than I thought it would be. It is supposed to be “medium” on heat, but I would say it was medium/hot. Needless to say the beer went down quick! 🙂
Any Redbird fan could also make a good case for the presence of a heated SF Giants rivalry in the 80’s on the merit of two pretty good dust ups in both the ’86 and ’88 regular season and on the “One flap down” antics of Jeffrey Leonard during the ’87 NLCS in which Bob Forsch drilled the Giant LF’er in game 3 after coming in to the game in a relief appearance at Candlestick Park. I still believe that message sending HBP was the impetus for a Redbird rally that lifted the Cardinals back to win that game 3 after they trailed by several runs in the latter portion of the game. Bob Forsch had seen enough and let Leonard know about it in the time honored tradition of doing baseball business. And many probably recall the primary players in the two aforementioned brawls. They included names such as Ricky Horton, Jose Oquendo, Will Clark, Ozzie Smith and Vince Coleman. Heck, even managers Whitey Herzog and Roger Craig joined in on the melee and mixed it up with one another…Haha!
I should also mention that I overlooked the fact that SF manager Bob Melvin was the Giant catcher who was situated behind HP when the ’86 brawl was sparked when Vince Coleman attempted to score from 3B after Melvin mishandled a pitch to Willie McGee. Melvin recovered and tossed the baseball to his pitcher who tagged Coleman for the out, but the Giants were already incensed that Vince had stolen 2B and 3B while the Cardinals were holding an 8 run lead. Let the boys be boys…Haha!

The impetus behind one of Herzog’s best quotes: “I told him (Giants manager Roger Craig) we’d quit stealing bases if he promised not to hit any more home runs.” Then later: “Does he (Craig) think he invented the game?”

Yeah, I’m not sure if Whitey ever invited Craig to go fishing with him. I also just revisited an article about that July ’86 brawl. Coleman had been brushed back and then plunked earlier in that same game which prompted Andy Van Slye to comment that, “Throwing at Vince for running is like throwing at Mickey Mantle for hitting HR’s. I’d also forgotten that Tommy Herr was spiked in the face and neck and needed eight stitches to close up the wound. The entirety of the fun is readily available and documented on youtube. It makes me feel old, but it’s worth a look…Haha!
Mikolas ended his 2023 season so well, I thought he’d carry it over into 2024. But he didn’t and he is ending poorly here tonight. At least so far.
