Burly/Herrera combo next year at either 1B or DH?
I don’t think Herrera needs to be platooned, if that’s what you mean. If he is going to be on the team, I would not want his bat sitting on the bench a substantial amount of the time, especially just so a platoon hitter can get some reps. Put him at 1B or DH. I really think we need to move away from clogging the roster with a guy who can’t play defense and is a platoon only bat. Find all around players for the bench, even if they are not real great. Somebody like the unexciting Church may be by later in the season.
Herrera has an .848 OPS against right-handers and a .635 OPS against left-handers. So, he has reverse splits. Need to platoon him with a RH batter.

We had a chance to have a winning season with a win today but blew it in the 8th. The Rockies scored five times after two were outs and won 10-8.
Need just one win in San Francisco to have a winning record. That way Mo, Oli, and Bill can say we had a winning season and were pretty close.

Well shoot – four outs away from a sweep, with a three run lead and we blew it.
But gorgeous day here. Met up with my buddies at a downtown sports bar that has a rooftop area for lunch and a beer.
Headed to the park and it looked like the Cardinals were going to be 3-0 in live games for me this year. But alas, a loss today. Not that it matters that much, but I would have done several things different than Ollie in that home eighth and the top of the ninth. In the eighth, when Ollie went to make the pitching change as the Rox were rallying, they had lefties coming up. He brought in Leahy. I would have gone with JoJo, but maybe he is not variable. He did not pitch last night, so I don’t know why you bring in Leahy when lefties were due up.
Then in the ninth, he brings Donovan up to hit for Herrera. I would have let Herrera, and Siani who would have followed both hit. Had they gotten on, I would have then used Donovan for Saggese. Ollie went with Donovan, who did get a hit, then Burleson for Siani, who flew out to shallow left to end it.
But again, not a game that matters much. And it probably helps seal Ollie’s fate if management is saying a bit that way.
At least the Cardinals finish out the season vs. a NL team, but it still seems a bit odd that the last 3 games of the season will be against the Giants. I recall being really nervous at the prospect of the Cardinals having to travel to SF to make up a rainout that could potentially decide the winner of the NLC in ’06. TLR had reserved Chris Carpenter for that potential makeup game and went with Reyes in the last home game vs, the Brwers in StL. Reyes and the Cardinals took the loss in that game, but the Astros also lost to the Braves and that makeup game became unnecessary. At any rate, I sure didn’t like the idea of traveling to SF to play game #162.
Schedule this year was odd.
We started the season in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. A four game set. That was our only trip of the year to Dodger Stadium.
And now we finish the season in San Francisco against the Giants. Our only trip of the year to Candlestick Park.
Just seems odd to me.

Yeah, it doesn’t make nonsense, Rats. Not at all unlike a lot of other things in this once great land of ours.
Thanks Brian. Ollie had already used Matz and King so we were out of lefties. Fernandez was struggling with his command, and although he got the first two in the eighth he was hit hard after that.
What can you say? The Rox never let up, and it was Coors Field.
Like I said, 10 runs required to win this one. Even though watching wins is more fun, each loss technically gives us a better shot at a lotto draft pick. So it could pay off next July.
Currently we are in a bunch with Minnesota, Seattle, the Cubs and Boston between 80 and 82 wins. San Fran could technically catch us with a sweep this weekend. We are locked out from being higher than 14th in the overall standings or lower than 19th. Put another way, we will be anywhere from 12th to 17th in the lotto. That would put us approximately at a 0.6% (17th) to 1.6% chance (12th) to get the 1st pick and the other Holliday son, and a 4.6% to 13.2% chance to get into the top 6 picks.
Last year, the Guardians and Reds got the top two picks despite having the 10th and 14th best lotto odds.

I wouldn’t mind having Herrera’s bat in the lineup everyday as long as his defense isn’t a disaster. We already have at least 5 or 6 guys who are slated for some DH duty (Contreras, Herrera, Walker, Gorman, Burly, Baker). We are either going to have to platoon everyone, trade everyone, or say to heck with worrying about defense.

It is exactly like the fantasy teams guys talk about at the watering hole I stop in at. Every day they run a bunch of sims so the algo can figure out the optimum squad to throw out there.
We are misfits. Two catchers that can hit, and a third defense-first guy. Two center fielders that can catch the ball, but don’t hit much – although both look like they might hit better next year. Then several guys who shouldn’t be on the field but can hit some. Unfortunately none of them hit enough to really carry a club.
