Will this be Gibson’s last game as a Cardinal?

Thoroughly enjoyed the game last night. Fedde was phenomenal. And as KCB said in the game thread, you have to like Herrera. Pages had a nice game and a great throw, but Herrera needs to be the catcher with Pedro as backup.

That leaves Contreras as a DH or maybe he can transition to first if Goldy is gone after Sunday. Or traded if that happens and he accepts a deal. But we need his offense.

It is easy to see the problem our club had this year. We did not have the two middle-order bats you need to contend. We did not have the .900 and .850 OPS guys anchoring the 3-4 spots in the order. Can we come up with those two next year? The only way I see it is if one guy among Contreras, Gorman, Walker, or Winn progresses to that level, or we bring in someone from outside the organization.

Specific to the game, I did not like Marmol removing Libby. You had a lefty coming up – should have let Libby work through it. Bringing in Helsley seemed like it was a cheap way to get him the save record. Just looked bad to me. Nice that Helsley got a one-pitch save, but you need to let the younger guy work out of the jam. It’s not like we were playing for a post season spot.

Otherwise though, when I see our club live I am impressed. These guys have a lot of character. They get after it. Just don’t have the horses to get over the top like they did in ‘21 and ‘22.

Will be back out in a few hours for another round. I think Gibson is re-upped for next year. He has provided a lot of leadership to the younger guys in addition to pitching pretty good. And it would not surprise me to see Marmol back, but he will be on the proverbial hot seats and if we stumble out of the gate he will be gone.

I know nobody likes the eye test anymore. But without chasing down a bunch of stats-Herrera looks like a better hitting prospect than Walker at this point. Ok here’s a stat. Walker has 567 ml atbats.Herrera only has 277.

Herrera has consistently hit the ball well at every stop since he was signed. I don’t think he has the ceiling that Walker does (the Cards should have let him do his thing with minimal tailoring for launch angle until he was totally settled as an .800+ OPS player for a couple of years rather than chasing the next Aaron Judge right now) but he is worth keeping for his bat.

Contreras greatly improved his pitch framing this year and is by far the best catcher we have in terms of controlling the running game.

Contreras is already there. Gorman has an .806 OPS last year, so the talent is there. I think his issues were mental this year – he just couldn’t get out of the funk. Hopefully this offseason rejuvenates him. Winn showed tremendous improvement this year. Hopefully, it will continue. Would not bet on Walker if my job is on the line.

Ideally, we would get one of Teoscar Hernandez or Anthony Santander as a corner OF to lengthen the lineup.

Burleson had an .803 OPS against righties and a .509 against lefties.
Goldschmidt has a .675 OPS against righties and a .786 OPS against lefties.
Baker had a .390 OPS against righties and a 1.146 OPS against lefties.

You could bring back Goldschmidt as a platoon at 1B and late game defensive replacement for Burleson, or you could try your luck with Baker in a platoon with Burleson at 1B.

Herrera is up because Contreras is IL. Ivan needs an everyday roster spot in 25′. Even as a platoon partner off the bench, he adds value now.

Where does that roster spot come from next season? CF looks like a lefty bat. We have righty bats at C, 3B, SS and 1B; and if we carry 3 catchers, both catchers are righty bats on the bench.

If they bring Goldy back, Herrera needs to be corner outfield friendly because Burly is showing a handedness issue, and Noot is often injured. The outfield is left handed.

I’ll bet you my kingdom, that Ivan is the best outfielder of he, Walker and Burly, today.

Someone should point out that Walker also looked like a better hitting prospect when he only had 277 ABs.

Oh and a comment on Saggese. He has a real quick bat. He hit a foul that looked like it went completely out of the stadium.

I like him, but his pitch selection needs work. Swings at too many bad pitches. Get more selective and I think his bat and glove will play.

…Walker needs to adjust his mechanics. If a pitch is middle-in, he can put a charge to it. If it is on the outer half, he is unbalanced and sort of flails at it. He needs learn to throw his hands at the ball – drive the pitch, not try to yank it.

Herrera hasn’t been sent back to learn launch angle yet. Maybe than he can regress.

Arenado sits, Herrera to cleanup. I’d carry 4 catchers if they can all hit 😉

Nudie Bar and Goldberg both homer in the 1st.

Then a double by Fenton Walker.

2-0 St. Louis still batting in the 1st.

As soon as we take the lead in the top half, brick hands Saggese with a fielding error to start the bottom of the first.

Gibson needs to stop the bleeding here in the first. 2-2, 2 on and still only 1 out.

2-2 after one. Both pitchers needed 30 pitches to get through the first.

Rockies scorekeeper is either stupid or has an agenda. He seems to value errors, over earned runs, for his pitchers. Problem is, those ROE are our hits being stolen. I call BS.

It seems like we looked at Baker for a while and now are looking at Herrera for a while. Obviously one is better than the other.

I’d like to thank both Pages and Herrera for homering, after i ran my mouth earlier. It usually goes the other way.

Burly/Herrera combo next year at either 1B or DH?
