Hopefully he wouldn’t be scared off by catchergate. Nobody wants to get cut off at the knees and their credibility destroyed by a bunch of losers looking for a scapegoat.
When’s the last time we signed or traded for a middle of the order guy and he came in and starred or powered up right away? Maybe Beltran or Berkman? Sensing the theme here? I do believe that there is a learning curve for right handed batters in particular at Busch. It takes some time to get in a groove there so I’d be fine with making the trade a year early so he’s ready for when we might have a real shot to win a division again.
But then you are back to trading something good for a one year rental unless he agrees to an extension as part of it. What is the chance he would do that without ever testing the market in free agency?
Are the players you give up worth more than the draft choice you get or give if he leaves as a fa or is signed as a fa. That’s the question. Trade and sign is probably ideal because of the draft choice.
What are the players we give up “worth” anyway? In my example you’re giving up an average to slightly above left handed outfielder (we’ve got plenty of those in the system), a “sore armed guy” who the experts all love, and a 1B with prodigious power that’s blocked from really displaying it here by the logjam ahead of him. Throw in a lotto ticket from the lower levels and you’re done. Trade, pay him whatever he wants to avoid free agency, be done.
Bling you think all of our prospects are bad anyway so why would you care if we gave up Hence + Gorman + a 40 FV or something like that for Vlad Jr?
While I stated I would like the Cards to get Vlad either via trade or FA, I am unsure if Shapiro (Blue Jays GM) will trade him. They extended him one year and he may want to go all in try to win. Everyone thinks they should trade Vlad or Bichette to rebuild, but GMs don’t always do what makes sense.
My thoughts exactly on this awful offensive lineup. No help from inept MO this past offseason.He and this FO have to go the week the season ends or years of poor baseball are coming.
Albert I’m not complaining about whoever you want to trade for Guerrero, I’m just pointing out that trading for a one year rental is not going to help. I agree that if we could sign him it would be great. But like others have pointed out on previous occasions, guys wait a long time to get a crack at free agency, so its worth remembering that him passing on that to sign an extension is unlikely. It comes down to whether BDW is going to pay more than 29 other owners.
We are in a terrible position because we don’t really have top shelf trade goods, and anything good we do trade opens a hole we can’t really fill because we lack quality depth. Add to that we have an owner who is not going to substantially increase payroll, may even decrease it some due to revenue uncertainties and soft sales, and who is very slow to eat any unproductive contracts. Then consider that what we need are impact players for both the lineup and the rotation, which are what costs the most in talent and money, neither of which we have in abundance.
