Haha!…You can tell he likes those Bavarian Bismarks. They’re my favorite too, but I can never find them any more. The stores have been out of them since Lance was signed last winter…
Good grief. 8th inning man on second, nobody out and 3 guys in a row cant do anything. The top of our order no less.
Why do we say Siani can’t hit? His .254 average is higher than half our lineup last night. Goldschmidt, Nootbaar, Pages, Walker all lower.
Obviously, Siani is capable of hitting, as just about any major leaguer is. Still, he’s mostly a singles hitter with speed, which is fine for your #9 guy. It’s not great if you have a lineup with other black holes in it, like Pages and (until recently) Walker.
Siani would be more valuable in the ninth slot if he could learn to take a walk. His OBP is under .300. Getting on base a little more ahead of the top of the order would help, especially since Winn doesn’t sport the kind of OBP you really want at leadoff.
To me, you just can’t have sub .325 to .330 OBP guys. I know a lot of them are out there but those are usually the guys teams are trying to replace.
A sub .300 OBP is a killer.
As much as I like Siani, he has a very weak .254 batting average and there is more to being a good hitter than hitting singles. He needs to draw more walks and start getting more doubles. He has been very valuable with the glove and I want to see him in the lineup still though.
The upside comp I can think of for Siani is Kevin Kiermaier. He has a career BA of .246 and career OBP of .304. But he was also a four-time Gold Glove winner in CF and had some pop with five seasons of double digit homers and also six years with double-digit steals. On the downside, he had six seasons of below 100 OPS+. At 34, he seems about done, but may finally get a ring if the Dodgers can win the World Series. He is a perfect late-game defensive replacement for a championship caliber club. Not a bad career for a 31st rounder…
P.S. Anything they get from Siani, which has been quite a bit so far, should be considered gravy for a guy they picked up off the waiver wire. On the other hand, we shouldn’t expect him to suddenly become a league-average hitter, either. As I see it, his key would be to improve his walk rate. He had a career .339 OBP in the minors despite hitting just .243.
I agree 100%. I expected Siani to walk more because he always had done so in the minors. Taking a few more walks and hitting .250 with his defense is a playable every day CFer. Not close to an all star. But good enough to check the box and worry about other positional upgrades. But the player he is right now without the walks isn’t good enough to lock down CF. He is a wonderful guy to have on the bench – amazing really. He has speed, he bunts well, and he plays great defense. That’s really valuable for a waiver wire pickup.
Well, when a guy who can’t hit is out hitting half our lineup, including our #3 hitter something is messed up, and no amount of if, ands and buts makes it not messed up.
Some of us are talking about one specific player, but you want to drag it down by making it about the entire team. So be it, but if you do that with every discussion, we may as well not talk about individuals. Yes, the 2024 Cardinals offense is a major disappointment. Thank you for reminding us of that, just in case we forgot and made just one slightly optimistic comment about one player. Shame on us for not being totally negative on every post!
Brian, to be fair, I brought up Siani in the first place, pointing out he outhit half our lineup. Some chose to narrow the discussion on one specific player and, I suppose, give half the lineup a free pass.

1) Yes.
2) No. Some just do not feel it is necessary to keep repeating the same general points about the season-long problems with the lineup. Not talking about it in every post is not the same as giving anyone a free pass. Surely we all (except you apparently) know that already.Siani’s value will never be higher. We should trade him. Where have we heard that before? Lol
Me personally thinks the insertion of Siani late in the season as the everyday CF is foolish when you’ve decided to play the the golden boy out in RF everyday. Scott should be getting that PT and not some journeyman.
