Also BS Southeast and Southwest ExtraYou can bet that Shildty is chomping at the bit going into this series. It still probably bothers him that he was unceremoniously terminated by the Cardinals for ‘philosophical reasons’.
I’m a little concerned that the all nighter that the Cardinals team pulled at the team hotel after the game Saturday night might catch up with them by Monday’s game. I’m pretty sure that it was Alexa Datt who reported that there was water running down the stairs and down the elevator shaft and under people’s doors. And the hotel was booked solid so the hotel couldn’t just move the team to other rooms.
It’ll be Randy Vasquez on the bump for San Diego. He has started 17 games for the Friars but hasn’t started in 2 weeks. Middling RHP should mean good things for us.
We very much need this game. I think Vasquez is starting for the Padres and he is their worst one of the 4.
I guess he was recalled from El Paso where he had an 8.78 ERA in 7 starts. I guess he like Tijuana over Juarez.

If there was any justice Herrera would have to catch every day despite the base path carnage, just to teach Mo and his clipboard cadets a lesson. 8 freaking years and they could’t figure it out. Oh! but the bat! giggle, he’s dreamy, catch me if I faint.
To file away. SD is 13th in MLB with 91 stolen bases. (The Cards are 22nd with 71.)
Yeah we know we’re bad with Ivan the Terrible behind the dish and we don’t seem to run the bases or stay safely near a base too well.
I think we say yesterday that Pages was ailing a bit and grimacing. So that is likely why he gets a start behind the dish. Which is unfortunate.
Statistically Herrera is not much worse than Pages defensively. And his bat should more than make up for it. The Cardinals need offense, so I would like to see Herrera in there every day for awhile to see what he does.
The Padres have certainly had some outstanding players through the years. Most fans immediately think of Tony Gwynn, also known as “Mr. Padre.” No question he was one of the greatest all time pure hitters, but my first memory of a great Padre player was Dave Winfield. I’ll never forget the first time I saw him on the field at Busch Memorial Stadium in the early to mid 70’s. Lots of players are large impressive physical specimens nowadays, but back then the 6-6/220 lb. Winfield really stood out on the field when you saw him performing fielding reps and taking his rips during batting practice. I recall once seeing him standing next to the towering Willie McCovey when the HOF 1B’man was a Padre in the mid 70’s. Winfield hovered above Willie and made him look ordinary…Haha! At any rate, Dave Winfield may have been the prototype for the type of large and impressive physical statures that seem common in today’s game.
Yeah, I saw Judge on the field at the last game I attended in August of ’22 and he had the same visual effect as Winfield. It looked like a man and eight boys on the field of play. J.R. Richard was another player who projected that type of image. He certainly didn’t need to be standing on a hill out there in the middle of the diamond…Haha! I’m not sure how hitters got up the courage to stand in and face him.
That may be a good thing, TexCard. Maybe you can slide down close and snag a souvenir! Be careful diving for one of those mementos. Those seats don’t budge when you collide with them…Haha!
The comments about Dave Winfield bring me back to the ‘70s and seeing him when I had a bleacher seat at Dodger Stadium in late 1974. The guy was as impressive of a physical specimen as any player I recall seeing in person.
Judge does look similar – maybe a bit more girth. Judge is something – he does not even swing hard and hits 50+ homers.
Anyway, Winfield’s nickname on his APBA card back in the day was “Secretariat”. It seemed appropriate as he was as much of a thoroughbred as a ball player as I have ever seen.
The camera angle panning towards the OF and left side grandstand area on the Merrill 2 run base hit really illustrated the incredibly scant crowd mentioned by TexCard. An empty ballpark is a sad thing to behold. Even moreso when it’s in a town that normally draws pretty well. People have lost interest and aren’t buying it anymore.
