Now the question is – if this is a one run game in the ninth, can Helsley save it, or will Witt take him deep for a two run bomb to win it.

Weird AB by Pham. Thought he would be all over that 1-1 pitch. Then for sure on the 3-2, but he let them go.

Can Helsley hold them to two or less?

Helsley never makes it easy these days, but got ‘er done. Nice job by the pen and offense.

Who gets the game ball? Probably Contreras, but Libby gets honorable mention.

    Sounds good Mike!

Libby faced 10 batters and got 9 outs.

Always good to add to the W column, but the fact remains that 7 back at a point approaching mid August is a substantial amount of ground to make up. I’ll also say that a WC berth is looking like a dicey proposition with so many different teams reaching for a piece of cake. At any rate, 7 games off the pace is no bargain. If this team had Pujols, Molina, Carpenter, Berkman and Holliday, I’d feel better about their chances.

I think the Wild Card is likely our best expectation. Milwaukee has a 7 game cushion which is difficult but not impossible to overcome. We have 6 games against them and it would require us to win both of those series and for us to play at a very high level to overcome them. We have done it this season for a very long stretch and still couldn’t get it done. We’ll see how it turns out.

Please show me where we ” Got it done ” for a very long stretch. We have one month that we had a playoff caliber record. We are a barely 500 team 117 games into the season. At our current pace we will not be a wildcard team. Its doubtful that we make it if we play at the same pace we did in June, our best month. Theres been some good moments this season. But these are facts. Not good enough at this point, deep in the season, to make it into a watered down playoff format.

Another was of looking at it that they are almost 3/4 of the way done with the schedule. The trajectory hasn’t changed yet. They are 10-11 since the All-Star break and 4-5 this month (since the trade deadline).

For those who believe in Pythagorean W-L (based on runs scored and allowed), it would be 54-63. So one could suggest they have been quite fortunate to date to be 60-57.

Glass half empty guy forgot about Mo’s awesome fireworks display at the deadline, as a result of which we’ve opened up a 3.5 game spread over the last place Reds, and Gormy hit a double so he’s back. Rah. Now excuse me while I elbow my way up to the ticket window.

The Brewers are currently on a four-game winning streak. The last time the Cards even won three in a row was back in June. No one can predict the future, but there is little momentum I see.

It really is embarrassing when you can’t remember a name and the tape is rolling. I’ve been there…

P.S. If I hear the term “center cut” one more time on the game telecast, I think I will explode “fer sure”!

Realistically we are not going to be a post season team. Kind of ironic in following this 1964 parallel universe track on “OnlyCardsFans”, we were about the same number of games out with 4 or 5 teams ahead of us, depending on the day. So it can happen, but in ‘64 it took a once-in-a-lifetime collapse, the infamous “Phillie Phlop”, to get to the Series.

Some good fortune and a lot of mediocre teams has kept us on the cusp. All we can do is take it a day at a time and see how things play out. But I tell ya, that game last night was a lot of fun – full ballpark, back and forth between intra-state rivals. That is really what it is all about.

Happy to see Contreras come up big. He is a really fun player to watch. I was on the fence about us signing him as I thought we would be blocking Herrera and could have used that money elsewhere. But he can really hit and brings some intangibles to the club as well.

I dont know what the longest winning streak this year is. It feels like three but I guess I’d bet on five if I had to.

Now that Comcast (Xfinity) and Bally have sorted things out only the Apple+ games will be blacked out on Extra Innings BUT all the Bally channels were moved into the highest channel tier so if I want those back I will need to cough up another 30 or so bucks a month.

The greed never ever ends, with anyone, and no matter how much money is generated it will never be enough.

They want your ‘base package’ money up front and then they are gonna a la carte everything they possibly can to squeeze more money out of you.

Since the days of the Roman empire, people have been willing to overpay for entertainment and there is always someone willing to take your money.

Wasn’t it 2021 that the Brewers collapsed while the Shildt led Cards had a win streak, or am I misremembering? Not saying it will, only that it might, and remaining close enough for that is Mo’s goal. That constitutes competitive. All is well in FO land.

What comes to my mind is 2022 when the Brewers had a three-game lead on August 1, but went in the tank after trading away their All-Star closer Josh Hader. That was Marmol’s first season as Cardinals manager.
