I figured the broadcasters jinxed Fernandez’ appearance by the heavy praise when he came in, but to his credit, he got out of the jam with only one run in when it looked like it would be a lot worse.
The Redbirds escape with what’s still a pretty decent 3 run cushion, but the Cardinal manager came real close to once again demonstrating why I think he’s a genuine liability. I’ll never understand the logic of jumping the gun on removing a SP’er who’s in complete command and has only labored through 93 pitches. The little whiz-kid almost burned another one.
He was getting himself in trouble with his fastball, they switched to throwing sliders – except for the pitch that scored the run, which was another fastball.

1td, did you see my stats on Fedde on page 1 of this thread? 93 pitches is actually over his season average. Tonight did not seem like a situation to push him beyond his norm, IMO, though Fernandez almost made it look bad.
Yeah, I saw the part about 93 pitches. I don’t believe in lucky or unlucky numbers…In my view the proper approach is to have some confidence in your horse and send him out there to start the inning. Keep him under a watchful eye and if he shows the slightest tendency to falter, go and get him.
Fernandez has no command. They need to take him out of the game.
Fernandez has been very hittable since June 19th with a 4.35 FIP Since July he has an FIP in the 5’s. That’s not a good trend.
He has been very steady for us but they may want to pull him back a bit. Easier said seeing as were in position for a WC and we seem to play close. We’ll see.
This team is not out of anything. Atlanta is in real danger. IMO
I don’t know it this is true but it sure seems like all but a handful of teams are pretty garbage this year.
For me, Fedde’s first start didn’t suggest he should yet be considered a “horse,” although some may have called him a certain part of said animal. 😉
I do agree that it would be great if starters averaged more than 89 pitches per outing, but that is what Fedde apparently is. The difference last night is that he was less efficient than when he was with the Sox so he hit that pitch count through five innings. We will see what his start no. 3 brings…
The Braves have really faltered. They no doubt miss Strider a lot, plus they have some guys on offense not hitting anywhere close to what they did last year.
Still a long haul for our club. Several teams ahead of us for the wild card, and six out of the division. Not to mention a tough road ahead.
By the numbers our guys will be working on their golf game in October. But you never know. I have been following this site where a guy is posting game-by-game of the 1964 season, putting together a write up of each game as it corresponds to 2024. That ’64 club looked dead at this time of the year. They were playing a little better, but the pennant odds were about 2%.
And we all probably remember 2011, when in early September we were well out of any post season chance, but the bullpen got settled with Jason Motte moved to the closer role and the Braves stumbled, opening the door for us to sneak in.
Bling – my best guess would be no Helsley or Kittredge and a hesitancy to use Fernandez. Look for King , Liberatore, and Armstrong to throw in any kind of close game and Leahy to be used otherwise. Romero is probably the de facto closer should it come to that.
Liberatore & Armstrong have two of the three worst ERA’s on the team.
I agree, Helsley is probably a no-go. But Kittredge pitched two outs last night.
