Wow, that was some game! My phone died about the third inning, so no live reports.

First to Rats – yes, I drove across Indiana on I70, so through Terre-Haute and Indianapolis. Have to say the interstate is not kept up all that well in Indiana. You cross the border to Ohio and it is instantly much better.

But Ohio drivers are rude – or at least one guys was. There was a section where I was in the left lane, going 72 in a zone where the limit was 65. This guy was tailgating me and I could not get over to the middle lane. Finally an opening occured and I put on the blinker to slide over, but this guy zooms past me on the right, then zooms back to the left line and gives me the finger through his sunroof.

I know he was in a hurry, but you don’t give the finger unless someone is going below the limit on the left, not above the limit. Come on man!

    Okay, on to the game…..

Over all, I like our club. Seem to have good intensity, good camaraderie and attitude. Looks like most of the pitches are called from the bench, but I figure they are all on the same page most of the time.

Contreras was kidding around during the game with fans behind the Cardinal dugout. He brings a lot of fun to the club. But that was one intense game – almost like a tight hockey game as the fans were in to every pitch. But Skenes is their guy.

In the ninth, I was almost shocked that Shelton did not walk Burleson and pitch to Contreras. You would have had the double play possibility, plus I thought Contreras was a better strikeout potential than Burly. But he had Skenes go after Burly and that was the game as it tuned out.

Sorry to see Goldy struggle so. He looks about done. You could see Skenes’ thoughts on the mound – he knew Goldy could not catch up to his fastball, and just toyed with him knowing if he threw a heater on the outer half he could get him. He would throw an occasional slider to him just to switch up a little and mess up his timing, then blow the fast ball past him.

Lynn really battled. He was not near as sharp as Skenes, but had good stuff. After that bases loaded jam early, when he got out of it he stood on the mound with his hands on his knees a good 10 seconds. It really took something out of him physically and emotionally. But the team fed off that emotion.

To take the next step, we need one more good bat. Gorman could be that if he can make better contact.

Oh, and I would flip Donovan and Burly in the order. Brendan has a little better OBP and Burly a better slug, so Donovan would fit at 2 better and Burly at 4.

Agree with aĺl of that Mike. A guy told me if you want to keep your serenity in tact while driving, take off your rear view mirror. I work 4 days a week and take off on Wednesday so I get to see the games. Im riding my mountain bike this morning than my daughter and granddaughter are coming over for lunch and game. I love the NL low scoring chess matches, but Im ready for the hitters to have a day.

Nice KCB. I thought about hanging around here in Pittsburgh and taking in the afternoon game. But I am running up to Cleveland this morning and touring the Rock & Roll museum. Then meeting up with my cousin tonight at the Guardians-Tigers game.

Then two days at the National Sports Collectors convention before venturing back. Still planning on stopping in at Hammonds Field in Springfield Saturday evening.

That is a real whirlwind mike. It brings back memories for me. Thanks for your thoughts on the game and the team. Its lucky the Pirates don’t have too good an offense, but we can relate to that.

Good comments Mike. I had the same thought about Donnie and Burly. It makes sense.

No score in the last of the 2nd. I’m not watching but the Redbirds had runners at 1st and 3rd and the game cast said Carlson was out trying to steal home.

Liberatore has now walked in two runs. 2-0 Pirates last of the 2nd. Bases still loaded and only one out.

A two out bases loaded double by Connor Joe makes it 4-0 Pirates.

This one is pretty much history. At least we won one of these three games. That’s all I was really hoping for.

Time to head to the Gasthof for my late lunch…….

I’ve refused to give up on Lib and Carlson. That last play is giving me encouragement to let it go. Neither guy making a play to help their team. I think both of their problems are between the ears.

Unusually poor results vs lefties by Libby.

Righties Winn and Pages single, but a Contreras groundout snuffs a bases loaded opportunity.

    Where’s the thump?!
    3 singles is it.

Making Martin Perez look like Steve Carlton again! This teams hitting is miserable! We have the pitching already! Let’s trade for a couple of bats this week!

Goldy doubles but he’s stranded at 3B.

5 walks usually leads to some runs.

Didn’t get to see any of Liberatore’s work, but after a glance at the box it looks like he took on the look of a young Steve Matz.

Liberatore was not good, but it should have been 2 to 0 instead of 4 is Siani would have been in center! Saying your playing Carlson for offense is a baseball oxymoron!

The difference between last year and this year seems like we don’t have to roll out the laundry list guys so much this year. An item to remember is that Liberatore has had stretches where he looked good 3 out of 4 times, just like Pallante. Sober voice of reason again.

Both have well known handedness flaws. Roller coaster results shouldn’t be surprising. It’s the 3 batter rule, extended, as long as you can go.

I guess Roycraft should have made the pen start. I don’t know his history but he faced the same batters as Libby.

    GG records 2 scoreless IP.

One extra base hit (double) is not good support of a bullpen start. We earned this loss.

Pirates push across 5 runs on only 5 hits while the Redbirds are flat as a pancake and get blanked on 6 hits.

3 runs in 27 innings against the Pirates! It’s a miracle we didn’t get swept! We need hitters right away! They have played over 100 games already! I know many want pitching at the deadline but I think we need hitters! After our first three hitters you have almost nothing!
