Being the new guy here I continue to be amazed at how many negative nabobs inhabit the place. Most surprising is that all it takes is one loss to set them off. Reminds me of the MLB boards before they killed them. I will stick here because there is a lot of info on the minors and prospects but, some days, it seems that every member of the team (except Yadi the God) is hung for some transgression in the last game. I do see some blame deserved but most of the time it is on a group – pitchers, offense, defense or bullpen. Brian should get credit for continuing to keep plugging holes in a leaky boat.
My one contribution for today: Ozuna is open and probably pressing for an extension but if nothing comes soon he may be waiting for free agency. I see a lot of improvement in him this season and would hope he is extended. I think that price will be more reasonable than trying to match free agent offers.
I lied, I do have one more contribution (or as some call it a WAG): I am thinking that Wacha will be added back to the rotation before he becomes too ‘unstretched’. I am hoping they don’t try to put CMart back in as a SP.

Interesting thought, MM3. I believe he recently moved on from Boras so maybe that was the reason. We know that Boras clients rarely give their teams a break, so perhaps Marcell thought he’d have a better shot with another agent.
I wonder how the team feels about him, though. I know that Mo was a bit critical of his off-season routine, or at least seemed to indicate that he wasn’t hearing much. apart from that, they might be open to talking about an extension, but my feeling is that they are probably more interested in the qualifying offer / draft pick and going with a younger talent from the system in the outfield next year.
Personally, I have been interested in breaking the log jam in the outfield since the beginning of this year at least. Ozuna seems like the lowest hanging fruit of that bunch, so maybe I have just assumed that that is the direction that it is going to go. However, that is not to say that the Cardinals couldn’t break it some other way if they were to give Ozuna and extension. Martinez or Fowler might be pieces that could be traded to open up space for O’Neill and later Dylan Carlson.
stlcard25. My first thought when it was announced that Ozuna had dropped Boras was he was looking for an extension. Goold does not agree with that but so be it. Here lately you are seeing columns saying he is happy with the Cardinals and while it is true that Mo criticized him for his off season routine he seems have taken that to heart and it shows in his attitude and performance. Yes he gets a lot of rbis because of batting position but at least he gets them. We have had some empty bats there in the past few years.
As for the logjam outfield, my thought is that if he doesn’t show some improvement in the Ks ONeil will be the one looking at a new home. JMart is playing super cheap and, while he is not hot right now, has a record that can’t be ignored offensively and has shown some improvement defensively. He and Matt Holliday were probably on a par defensively. He does have a surprisingly good arm.
I sure hope they don’t trade away Carlson. He is impressive and probably ready for AAA if room can be found. What does Fowler have left after this year – 2 years? That contract along with Cecil was probably a mistake but at least he does produce from time to time. Cecil is yet to earn his first million….lol.

I think this one will be played. Doesn’t look like there is any rain in the St. Louis area. Looks like there is some south of St. Louis, down around the Poplar Bluff area but I doubt it turns north.

MM3, I tend to agree with you about Ozuna. Two months ago I would have said there was a 5% chance he would be extended but now I think it is creeping up closer to 50%. His production is hard to ignore. It still is far from a slam dunk that it will happen but I would imagine the FO is at least entertaining the idea now. I agree with stl25 that the OF logjam in this organization needs to be addressed at some point. There just aren’t enough seats at the table.
The other thing to consider is payroll. Yes we have some money coming off of the books. A total of $31M for Gyroko, Wacha, Gregerson, and Ozuna. But we have a total of $26M in raises for Goldy, Carp, Mikolas Wong, and JMart. So if you add another $18M/year in an Ozuna extension how much money is left for other improvements? Our team is not willing to go near the luxury tax like our competitors to the north.
As for the mood of the board, it can get rocky at times but I think differing opinions is a good thing. Groupthink is dangerous because people can get too insulated from the real world by living in their own thought bubbles. We all tend to only want to associate with those just like ourselves by how we get our news, social media contacts, etc….. but a little variety is good sometimes.
I am not really as negative as I come across sometimes. I think the Cardinals are a very solid organization even if they frustrate me from time to time. 99% of my frustration usually stems from my extreme dislike of the Cubs. I praise their front office a lot but in all honesty a lot of is probably jealousy. It just burns me to no end to see them continually on top of us. I have several acquaintances who are huge Cub fans and the last 4 1/2 years have been miserable for me being around them. I have said it before and I will say it again, the day that the Cardinals finish the season (including playoffs) higher than the Cubs I will get off of Mo’s back and will join the sunshine pumping club.

I’m not part of that vicious STL vs. CHC rivalry thingy. Right now I hope for the Cubs to lose and the Cards to win… same with MIL. And I don’t want PIT or CIN gaining on us. In the past we had a great dislike for the teams were competing with us for the division. One year CIN, next year PIT etc. Things got ugly on the MLB comments pages.
But its any team competing with us that I have problems with. A win for us and a loss for them makes my day.
I wish the minor league outfielders were doing so well there was a real issue. That is not the case, however. All of the Memphis outfielders, including O’Neill, have OPSes at .795 or lower. Carlson at Springfield (.901) is this year’s only OF standout.

Yes, other than Edman, the infielders are having an even worse year offensively. But the points being made earlier in the thread were about this perceived logjam of outfielders and the need to trade some of them. I don’t see it.
Great sac bunt by Hudson and smart baserunning by Bader to take an extra base. Carpenter’s RBI single makes the score 1-0 in the third.
It always baffles me how guys swing at pitches that were never its the zone from their release point (Wong and Weiters just did that). I know the game is tougher than it looks, but seems like these guys should be picking up those pitches better.
Ks are killers…after two singles put runners on the corners with no one out, Wong and Wieters strike out and the intentional walk leaves it up to Hudson, who battles but Ks on the 8th pitch. That one hurts.
I thought the weekend sweep would kick us in gear And it still could happen but not so far. We have such a ho hum attitude unless it’s the Cubs, at least it seems that way.
Dave, even with the sweep of the Cubs the offense still didn’t really pick up any. They scored 11 runs in 3 games and 7 of those runs was in one game.
You’re right about that black hills. I was just thinking with How we won… the walk off, wainos performance, that it my inspire us more to play harder but I don’t see it. Of course this is all a mute point if we win this game and then win the series at Wrigley.
It’s funny how baseball works. Before the first series against the Cubs, I thought maybe we can take 2/3 because of how we were playing… we get swept. The second series… I was worried we’d lose the series based on how we were playing and we did the sweeping. Now we play the reds and look like we did most of May. We must be waiting to get to Wrigley for our bats to awake again.
Dave, I wouldn’t be too anxious for the series this weekend. It could be ugly.
As for today, the bats are frustrating but another solid performance by Hudson. He has really turned things around and makes this rotation look so much better. (See I can be positive). :o)

MM3, you’re right it takes 1 bad game, 1 bad AB, 1 bad pitch and all of a sudden, fans are now managers, PC’s, HC’s, scouts, we have all the answers and if they would just listen to our ideas, they would win more. That’s what we think we are but above all, what we know we are is True and Loyal Cardinal Fans to the end so well question everything when it doesn’t go Cardinals way but praise when it does. Waino pitched a great game Sunday and we all Marveled at his performance, but If Wong doesn’t catch that ball, the focused more would be on Schildt and leaving him in there too long,
