Nats 2Quick off topic…..the wifey and I are contemplating taking a train from Chicago to Arizona this winter as something different to do. I think it would be a great way to see things that you normally wouldn’t see if driving. My lessor half thinks that the sleeping quarters would be “gross”, so she’s against it . Have any of you ever taken the train on a long trip? Would love to hear some train testimony, good or bad.
3-1 on a Robles 2 out line single to center and that hurts! Robles will jet into 2nd on the Bader offline throw home. Robles is now 4-6 lifetime vs Mikolas.
Runners on the corners with two outs in the 6th and JMart pinch hitting. Nats leaving Corbin in. JMart has not looked good lately, but maybe that’ll change here.
Never tried the train Pugs. Last time I checked the same price as flying but planes way quicker. Getting a direct route without layovers is tricky too. Most people that use the train are afraid to fly. Was working at train station one time and US Marshalls blitzed the place couple times a month. Guys told me they arrest wanted people almost every time the do it. A lot of criminal types ride the train cause the securitys laxer than you have at the airport. Sorry sounds negative but true story.
Finally a piece of good news for Cardinal fans here in the 6th as Corbin has now eclipsed the 100 pitch Mark. More good news, as with 1 out Edman is the recipient of a 4 pitch walk and then Bader rips a base hit to right, sending the fleet footed Edman scampering all the way around to 3rd. Let’s hang with the action a bit shall we?
Martinez (pinch hitting for Mikolas) – On 3-2 Jose strikes out swinging as both runners were off to the races…..and the throw to 2nd will find it’s way into center! Edman will score with Bader taking up new residence at 3rd…..listen to the crowd.

Nats 3And JMart whiffs. Surprising….not. He’s added no value in quite a while. However, I was wrong as JMart’s K was just the second out. Bader was running on the pitch and the catcher’s throw goes to CF, allowing Edman to score. Fowler can’t deliver Bader, grounding out to end the inning.
Thanks for the train tidbits, Wooster! That seals it…… we’re flying. I really thought it would be neat….traveling thru the open countryside like Dizzy and Daffy did back in the day…..maybe finding a couple poker players to play a little 5 card stud while enjoying some Wild Turkey. But if there’s even a hint of the criminal element around, that’s not the place for my little Daffodil. Thanks again Wooster.
I just thought it would be easier to sleep all the way there than deal with an airline aseat but it was like 24hrs vs 3hrs flying.
that instant replay call was horrible earlier. the guy was off the bag plain and simple. I was never a fan of instant replay but if you are gonna use it, get it right. hell the guys over the replay would have probably said the royal player was safe at first in the 85 world series.
A Howie Kendrick base hit to left with 1 out and nobody on in the top of the 8th, leaves the Washington 1st baseman just one notch short of hitting for the cycle. Let’s hope he gets it….a 2 out double with nobody on in the 10th would do the trick….. with the Cards whacking a walk off homer in the bottom half of the 10th.
Pugs, I don’t recall ever taking a train trip in the US, but took quite a few with my family when we lived in Europe years ago. Not as many miles as you’re talking about, though.
A lot of countries and sites in close proximity in Europe often make trips by train more logistically sensible than air and they’re just more geared for it. Certainly the views offer more variety as I remember miles and miles of windmills, wind turbines, vineyards, olive trees, sunflower fields, etc. It is pretty relaxing if you take it as such. It’s worth a try at least once to get the taste.
John Gant appears to be toast. If nats hold on well probably be going into wrigley with a one game lead
Pretty vicarious post, Euro. Now you have me thinking maybe we should give Amtrak a whirl. I would love to see the sights you described while cruising down the tracks on a train. Just out of curiosity, I wonder how fast the trains went back in the 30’s compared to now? Matter of fact, wouldn’t that make a great book……I would love to hear stories of train travel from old tyme baseball players. But unfortunately, they are all but gone from that era.
Gant seems shot. He hasn’t gotten much of anyone out lately and probably needs to be moved to middle relief to get his groove back. The Nats just put this one out of reach so I’m going to bed. Hopefully the Cubs lose.
This has been a game of “not getting it done” I’m afraid. A pretty poor performance given the importance. Good teams find a way to get it done at home, in September, in games that matter.
Well if the cubbies lose tonight too and we come back to beat these guys tomorrow, things will look fairly chipper.
Coming into tonight, Gant has a 5.52 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in his last 30 games. He saved the bullpen early on in the season along with Brebbia, but he’s not someone to lean on right now.
Meanwhile, the Nats’ 80 year old reliever with a bad ERA got the job done for his team. That’s winning baseball.
Nats announcers are saying the crowd has been lifeless this series. The Cards have been lifeless for a week now, so not surprising the crowd would mirror that.
If Mike Shildt was a better manager (he’s average at best) he wouldn’t have pulled his star reliever who was breezing through his outs for a reliever who hasn’t been good since May.
DeJong at a minimum needs to be batting lower in the order. At the most, he needs to sit a few games to have a mental re-set. He’s hitting .193/.242/.386/.628 with 18 Ks in 62 PAs for September coming into today’s game. He’s only hitting .218 since August 1.
I’m far too lazy to confirm this is true but I’m assuming it is.
