Wonderful things happened last night while I was sleeping. Goldy finally awakened from his 140-game nap and Waino continued to show that his contract was well worth the investment. Perhaps I should just consume my Saturday night steak, French fries and salad, wash it down with a hearty red, then hit the sack early again, dreaming of another offensive onslaught.
Rah Cardinals!In the past two games, Wong is 5 for 8 with a walk and sac fly, four runs scored, and four RBIs. In the two games we lost 2-1, he was hitless. It is becoming important to have a #1 or #2 who is hitting.
gscottar: Ah, a steak without French fries is like a day without sunshine. Besides, steck/frites is a traditional French meal. And I’m nothing if not a traditionalist.
Rah Cardinals!Cubs pounding the Pirates again. 7-1 in the 5th.
They are going to go 6-0 against the Pirates and the Reds.
A four game lead should be comforting with only 15 left to play, but it just does not seem like near enough. I’m guessing I’m not alone in that feeling….
Side note: If they end up tied in the division, the game would be at Wrigley due to current head to head results(and what it will take for the Cubs to tie would mean more wins over the Cards) and the Cards would almost certainly have gone with Flaherty for game 162. Also, it would be great to have it wrapped up by the Saturday of the last weekend to save Flaherty for game 1 at the Braves and go with a BP game of guys who won’t make the postseason.
Cubs now up on the Pirates 13-1.
As I said in my other thread, the 2019 season is going to boil down to the four game series in Wrigley next week. At this point I would almost take one win and be happy.
The Cards are in a position where they have to do it themselves. Can’t depend on help from any other teams not so crank that offense up and put the pedal to the metal.
Edman on HR. Bader—speed gets us a cheap run. They just can’t resist trying to get him at third. Risky throw.
Moose with his 34th homer of the year to tie the game. At least the analytics guys say Moose is no good so there is that consolation.
The heart of the Cards’ order is 1-9 so far. There’s an occasional feast (last night), but a lot of famine with those guys recently. Flaherty should’ve limited the Brewers’ to one run tonight.
It is frustrating that Goldschmidy, Ozuna, DeJong, and Molina are so non-productive, unless one gets seven RBIs in one night.
Webb has just taken the suspense out of the game in the 8th, making a big mess of things. Shildt with a couple head scratchers tonight (leaving Carp in as pinch hitter in the 7th after Counsell brought in the lefty and having Webb pitch in that high leverage 8th inning situation). Shildt got burned both times.
As hot as Milwaukee was we weren’t going to sweep them. We need to pray for at least one Cub loss the next few days plus a win tomorrow. Then hope for two of three against the Nats.
Euro, just remember, Shildt is an excellent manager and we can’t speak poorly about his decisions or posters have to point out he is an excellent manager.
forsch, so many moving parts with the evolution of pens, but it’s definitely not a stretch to see JF developing into that role in the next year or two.
Low octane offense is the primary reason for tonight’s loss. Things can change in a hurry, but I’m not expecting this offense to snap out of anything. They’ve shown this is who they are this year, which is below average at scoring runs. Occasionally, they will bring the lumber, but they are very inconsistent. This team will go as far as their pitching and defense take them.
With 7 of the last 9 against the Cubs, there is not a lead that is comfortable, unless it was 8 games, or 4 going in to the final 3.
