For one thing, we have too many automatic outs. The whole bench is under .200. In the 9th with sub .200 Urias and Scott due up all we had for a pinch hitter was Pozo hitting something like .120. A reset year shouldn’t have to mean giving up.
No one knows how long it will last, but Church has been swinging the bat well of late. However, the remainder of the usual suspects occupying the 7, 8 and 9 slots named Scott, Urias, Fermin, Sagesse, etc. afford an opposing pitcher with what must seem like an extended amount of leisure time on an all inclusive Mediterranean cruise. It’s a genuine pitcher’s haven down there at the bottom of the order.
Its not a reset Bling.
I guess they could’ve put in Fermin. My guess is they put in Pozo to see if he could park one.
The bench is weak currently Urias was brought in as a bench-insurance bat for Gorman. Can’t help that the ownership didn’t want to bring in another veteran bench bat. It’s just the way things are.
Obviously, this didn’t go the way the Cardinals wanted, but it is an excellent example of why ABS makes the game better overall.
In a tie game in the 9th, umpire John Bacon called a strike to Rob Refsnyder that missed outside by 2.71 inches. Then, he tried to call him out on a pitch that missed by 5.97 inches.
This was the largest miss on a called strikeout this season.

I’m not all that excited about the ones that are within a half inch. To me, that’s not what challenges should be about. But when you miss the strike zone by several inches and it gets called a strike, that’s really frustrating. We’ve been on the downside of some of those in the past. I’m glad they are trying to correct it.
I think they should have put like a orange line around the bog about a half inch wide or so and if its hits that instead of white, whatever the call was should stand. Im not big on the instant replays at second on plays where its obvious ball beat the player but somehow the player slides just under or something.
I’m thrilled with the ABS system because now each umpire cannot have their own personal strike zone that changes depending on which side the batter hits from. This is forcing umpires to use the strike zone as defined by rule or risk being made a fool of.
I think ALL balls and strikes should be called by the ABS system. Period.
