Yeah, it’s easy for us to say these guys should play everyday. It is quite different when you are dealing with some pain somwheee – maybe a sore heel or hip, and you could play but a day off really helps.
Baseball a constant quick starts and stops, and that can take a toll.
In working these Rockies games this Spring I am sometimes at the stadium 2 1/2 hours before game time, and the player’s parking lot is always full. Not sure exactly when the guys get there but it’s pretty early.
I understand though as a fan, you want your best lineup out there everyday. But reality is such that sometimes it is good to give reps to other guys. The one change I would have definitely made today would have been Pozo rather than Pages. Pozo is the better bat, although so far this year he has not done much. But give both guys 300 ABs with some consistency and I think Yohel would outhit Pedro.
MLB is a 162 game grind. I think we all know that and no one is suggesting that we are going to have a team made up of a bunch of Lou Gehrigs and Cal Ripkens but it seems a bit early in the season to be resting half of your lineup in one game. Of course part of the problem is that we have a pretty weak bench.
One other thing I would add is that while I acknowledge this is a rebuild year and my expectations for this season are low the fact that we have shown we can win games with a limited roster tells me that maybe we shouldn’t waive the white flag so easily. It is technically possible to rebuild and win games at the same time. Let’s keep the magic going as long as possible.
I do think they want to win. The players definitely want to win. I’m just stating that it isn’t the primary priority of the team as a whole (i.e. owners, managers, and coaches). Everyone wants to win. It’s just a difference in how they are prioritizing it.
Like you GScottar, I want them to win now and stay competitive every year. But it’s clear ownership has said development is priority 1. Hopefully we can win a lot too.
And Booyah is right! Pages could have easily covered 2nd while Pozo caught! Pages has experience there and is error free for his ENTIRE career at 2B.
This seasons’ schedule said they were supposed to show up for a baseball game on Wednesday. That same schedule said that they could sleep in all day on Thursday. It’s a simple concept that’s real easy to understand. These guys are all being paid at least union scale, a first rate health and dental plan for themseleves and their immediate families, which are all augmented by a nice pension. And that’s the way it should be. But you have to suit up, show up and go to work in order to be justifiably compensated with all of those good things. I don’t see anything wrong with any of that.
I was kind of joking around but yes. Oli could’ve thrown a worse lineup out there.
I mean it’s not like this team is an offensive juggernaut to begin with. You pretty much sit any duo of Walker, Burleson, Winn and you can pretty much chalk up an L. Oli just chose to sit all of them.
They should be well rested for the 17 game stretch. Let’s throw this one in the back of the cabinet and get a good result against a struggling Mariners team Friday.
Its always losers who say the season is a marathon. Winners play like its 162 sprints in a row. To have a culture of winning, players have to approach it that way, which they won’t if the manager doesn’t. This reset needs to hit on all cylinders so Ollie needs to up his game.
I happened to notice that the Padres, who are getting underway against the Rockies, are 9-1 in their last 10 games and are now atop the NLW and tied with the almighty Dodgers for 1st place. That Padre team looks like they plan on prying the Dodgers from their throne out West. I checked the Padre lineup for tonight’s game in Col. and was surprised to see that the SD manager didn’t have the foresight to rest Machado, Bogaerts and Tatis Jr. to keep those guys fresh for the long and arduous marathon grind that lies ahead. All those guys are manned up at their respective positions…Go figure.
The Mets are tied up 2-2 with the Twins as they head to the visitor half of the 7th in NY. I can hear the catcalls all the way out here in StL. Co. if the NY’ers lose their 13th consecutive game tonight.
Edit…They could probably use some well deserved R&R.
You want to win every series, so today’s setback was a bit discouraging knowing our skipper didn’t exactly leave it all on the field regarding his personnel decisions. We need to get right back on track by winning the next series vs Arozarena & Co.
Rat’s Wednesday trips to the famed Gasthof restaurant are truly epic. Not only is the food exceptional, but also rumor has it that one of the waitresses is a bit sweet on Rat. I think it’s time to ask her out on a date, Rat. Maybe take in a Jasper high school baseball game and buy her a couple of their all beef hot dogs. Then a trip home to introduce her to Whitey HerDog. It’s imperative that you really go all out on that first date, Rat.
The thing is that yesterday’s lineup really had nothing to do with ownership’s decision to have other priorites this year. The rebuild decisions were done over the winter and there shouldn’t be any more rebuild decisions until late July. Once the season starts the manager has to try to win as many games as possible with the 26 man roster at his disposal. Perhaps he thought a two day vacation would be good for some players before playing 17 days in a row. I disagree but I am sure that was his thought process.
The Cardinals have done nothing since the start of the season to inhibit the rebuild. They are playing with a scaled back roster and winning with a scaled back roster, which is very good news. We should just try to win each day.
The Cardinals have played 24 games this season.
Wetherholt, Scott and Herrera have played in every one.
Walker and Burleson have played in 23. Their only off-game all season was yesterday.
Gorman has also played in 23, but he was in Wednesday’s lineup.
To me, this all looks very reasonable.
It just seems like regulars can be given a break from the mental and physical grind in a more thoughtful way.
I don’t expect the regulars to play 162 games but I think spreading the off days around instead of all at once would be more reasonable.
Again – either you give yourself a very poor chance to win one game or a slightly worse chance to win 3 games in this case. I think it’s arguable either way which is better. It may work out better the way Ollie did it. We will never know for certain.
The real issue is that our bench is very poor. We knew that coming into the season. Hopefully replacements are developing.
None of the kiddos have to worry about seeing their names printed on the line-up card today. I’ve been a man of leisure since June of ’18 and I’ve found that it’s still a lot of fun doing nothing. I’m also sitting today…However, if I do happen to feel a sudden burst of energy, I may shuffle out into the yard to remove a dandelion or two and say hello to the yard critters. It’s a nice day for that sort of thing.
