Why offer Stanek a contract you say? 2 reasons as I see it. The first was mentioned above in that he is a veteran that they hope to trade for a decent prospect and probably more important is that he is a local kid who grew up a Cardinals fan. I bet he(or his agent) reached out to the cardinals and was willing to take a small discount on his salary.
Neither make it a good signing however.
