With a four-man bench, one of which is a catcher, it is harder for teams to carry a platoon starter and someone else to cover the other side of the platoon.

It’s kinda’ tough when your top RBI man is reduced to being Victor Scott when he hits against LHP. This season, against LHP, Burleson is identical to Scott in totality when Victor was sent down – .534 OPS. Even Pages is better (.574 OPS).

Burly is an MVP candidate vs. RHP alone, though, with an OPS over 450 points higher than vs LHP.

To help put this into perspective, this season, 69.5% of Burly’s plate appearances have been against RHP. The other 30.5% have been essentially wasted PAs vs. LHP. That’s a lot of outs to give up.

I am not against Burly, either, but I can’t see why he should be playing against left-handed pitching. Of course, having a better bench would surely help.
