Doesn’t every team do this? Of course they hype their players publicly as a feel good thing and to stir up ticket sales. And of course they hype their prospects to other teams to try to get them to overpay for them in a trade. But I’m reasonably sure every team does that.
To ZTR’s point, I agree. There are no stars. Gray, Donovan, Contreras, and maybe Herrera are difference-making players, but not quite star level. Winn, Liberatore, Helsley, and Maton are one wrung down on the ladder – still better than average. Then you have some at average and some well below that. But no true stars.
The team continues to be consistently inconsistent.
I don’t see a superstar anywhere in the roster – the kind of guy that can just carry a team for stretches of the season.
We have some good players – and you need a lot of those to fill out a roster – but we have zero big time bats or starters. So, .500 is what you get.
Agree for the most part ZTR. This team does lack a true star and has a bunch of average and some above average players. Teams like that can play above .500, but they are inconsistent and don’t do well in the playoffs because they lack a anchor player like Pujols who was so consistently great; not they have to get someone as good as Pujols, but someone top 10 or so in the league.
That also makes it hard from a team building standpoint when you have solid players across the board rather than some stats and scrubs. It is easy for a team with stars and scrubs to identify areas to improve. But when everyone is averagish, it is hard to find ways to make move to improve the team overall.
My comments on average players are more focused on the position players. This team has some major duds in the rotation that internal options would be a massive upgrade.
jnevel, I can’t say about other teams, but that isn’t the point I was trying to make. My view is that a segment of fans go with the “if everything works out right” scenario, ignoring multiple years of recent history. Probably their primary sources of information are team TV and radio which are inherently positive and stay that way no matter what.
I have personally been in the room when Mo was asked about adding players via trade. His reply was, “Where would they play?” (This wasn’t recent but the time I remember most clearly was back in the DeJong days, who they did eventually trade.)
This reinforces the feeling that they are reluctant to try to improve positions where they have hopes for a player already on the roster.
Ok. I understand better. And yes, Mo and the team have been extremely conservative about acquiring and dealing talent. They got bit hard with Ozuna and then took a lot of heat for Liberatore and kind of got scared to make a move to deal away anyone that wasn’t on an expiring contract. There are lots of examples where this became an opportunity cost with Carlson and DeJong and now potentially with guys like Gorman, Walker, and Nootbaar. On the other hand, holding onto Donovan and Winn has paid off. Basically, the organization is in love with its own talent and afraid to make a mistake and move on from that homegrown talent.
