I was reminded of an interesting player while looking at some baseball stuff and thought I’d share it on here. Anyone remember Herb Washington? Herb’s career spanned 2 seasons with the Oakland A’s. He played in 105 games, scored 33 runs and collected 31 SB’s without ever stepping into a batter’s box or placing a mitt on his glove hand. In fact, it looks to me as though Herb never held a baseball in his hand during a regular season game, although he did win a WS championship ring in ’74 to place on one of his fingers…Herb was a world-class sprinter who managed to latch on with Finley’s A’s as a “Designated Runner”…I’m reasonably certain they only make guys like Herb in the game of baseball.

Sonny needs to get his act together and bring his A game today.

FWIW, Gray has been below his career averages against the Bucs over the years. 6-4, 4.02 ERA in 13 appearances, 12 starts.

Gray couldn’t be catching the Pirates at a better time. 1/9 W/L their last 10 games. The haven’t scored 5 runs in any of their past 13 games.

Sonny’s last 2 starts have been poor, allowing a .963 ops to his last 50 batters on an elevated .455 BAbip.

Pozo isn’t allowed back-to-back starts, so Pages who has caught Gray his last 5 GS, needs to get him back on track.

We saw what ace like quality looks like last night vs the Bucs. Are you our ace or not Gray?

With Liberatore, McGreevy and perhaps Pallante, the rotation of the future seems to be taking shape. There are some building pieces in the lineup with Noot and Donovan, Winn, Scott, maybe Herrera and the old crew of Arenado and Contreras still around too. We really need to see Walker or Gorman turn things around to be a viable option for the lineup. With that cheap core, would Dewitt open de wallet as soon as 2026??

Gray is getting paid for the pitcher he used to be. Maybe he’s great in the clubhouse?

I don’t think he is going to open the wallet any time soon, if ever.

Financially, it makes more sense for him to cry poor than to try to build a winner.

With Gorman and Walker both having options I would consider sending them back to Memphis to let them regain their confidence. They aren’t doing the team or themselves any good right now. Bring up Saggesse and maybe Bryan Torres since Siani and Koperniak are both scuffling.

I would have liked to have seen Gray throw to Yadi, ZTR. I’d like to have seen what we have in Gray. Contreras, Herrera and Pages aren’t telling me.

Gray 24 pitches, saving the soft stuff mostly. 88 to 92mph, four and 5 times in a row, and it’s working.

Scott singles and terrorizes the base paths on Noot single, scoring. Winn bloops in a dbl hitting behind the runner, and Noot scores.

4 scoreless from Gray and Pages on 52 pitches. It’s working.

Scott and Winn in the middle of another rally, terrorizing the basepaths!

Reynolds never saw above 87mph and weakly grounds out on 7 pitches. It looked like Gray was missing where, and when, he wanted to. Well done Pages.

The 8, 9, leadoff and 2nd batters, are 7 for 13, with 3 runs scored, after Winn took his fourth PA.

Donny singles and Baker doubles, leaving 2nd and 3rd, one down. Failed sac fly opp by Gormans K, then Walker w/2 down, drives in two with contact, singling up the middle.

Yeah, that’s a genuine streak of 5 consecutive W’s to go along with .500 at just a little shy of the quarter mark.

I must admit that I did not see a 5 game win streak on the horizon. Good job!

Now, can this team win a game on the road?
