Alonso has been red hot to start the year and Soto has been heating up the last week. Hopefully the Cards quality pitching trends can continue and shut down those big bats.
Yeah, Alonso’s already pushed 20 RBI across HP. Hopefully he’ll cool off a little for these 4 games at Shea Lite.
As much as I once despised the NY Mets, I now sometimes find myself experiencing a bit of wistful nostalgia when I think of those Mets teams that engaged our Redbirds in what can only be described as bloodsport in those epic NLE battles back in the mid 80’s. It was total war. The supposed rivalry with the Cubbies is a minor slumber party pillow fight in relative comparison to the take no prisoner battles fought between the Cardinals/Mets of the 80’s. And those Mets were some really good teams as witnessed by the ’86 edition in particular who won 108 regular season games and a WS Championship. And I’ll never forget the season long Cardinal/Mets battle of ’85 for the NLE crown which came down to the last weekend of a regular season that saw the Cardinals win 101 games. I can comfortably say that I probably attended 25 or more games that season and during one 3 game series in which I attended all 3 games vs. the Mets, Busch Memorial Stadium was so loud and raucous that I was genuinely somewhat concerned that the decorative arch shaped precast concrete overhangs that were suspended directly above where we were sitting in our cheap seats high above the field of play in RF could possibly give way to the powerful vibrations and collapse crushing us all under tons of concrete and steel…No kidding. The whole ballpark felt as though it were pulsating up and down and experiencing some sort of earthquake caused by 50,000 rabid baseball fans stomping their feet in rhythm and unison with every note blasted from Ernie Hayes’ wonderful rally organ. At any rate, that season was what I would term a genuine pennant race that was fought to the finish. And now that I think about it, I still HATE the Mets…Haha!

Pond scum Dom. I tell ya they are pond scum. They’re good again so I can hate them better. I liked the old stadium a lot better.The win yesterday over the Astros coupled with the 4 upcoming games against the Mets leads me to once again ask the question…Why isn’t Rusty Staub a member of the HOF? Not only did “Le Grand Orange” have a 23 year career in the Big Leagues, but he was also pretty good…Do we play the Expos on this road trip?
The Reds blew one in the 9th today. Fraley had hit a grand slam in the last of the 8th to put the Reds up 7-5. Then the first two batters in the Seattle 9th, Raleigh and our old buddy Arozarena, homered to tie the game. Seattle won 11-7 in 10 innings.
I am wondering who is going to get off the schneid tonight for the Redbirds in this all important first game against the Metropolitans? My guess is Burleson.

How’s that Red’s SS doing? At 6-5 he’s a lot taller that our SS. But I happened to notice that both he and Winn like to wear those sparkly and shiny bicycle chains around their necks when they play baseball. I was a bit concerned that those multiple heavy chains wrapped around Winn’s neck may have contributed to the recent injury to his spinal column…Those things look like a lot of extra weight to carry around on the field of play. Has Elly De La Cruz ever had any back problems that could possibly be attributed to that sort of extra burden being placed on his primary support column?
Dom was eirily close on the Musial best season …not Gehringer, GHERIG is the man. I have to admit his ’34 season was awsome. Stan had more dbls a tripls, but Lou had some gawdy power numbers and a 30 pt. edge in Batting average
Strange that in his best year the Tigers beat them damn Yamkees to the pennant, wasting Lou’s Triple Crown

Gehrig? I’ll be darned…That was too easy! What’s so amazing about the Iron horse is that he’s right there at the top of the all time leaders in all of the slugging and serious production categories and he put those types of numbers up on the board in roughly 3000 to 4000 less PA’s than all of the other all time greats that he’s listed with. Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx are similar in the aforementioned respect but, in my view, Lou Gehrig eclipses them all. Astounding numbers when taken into consideration the number of seasons played.
Burleson draws to a blank after getting a 1st inning chance. I wonder what happened to that guy that predicted Burleson was headed to the HOF?
Pallante gets the GB with the IF perfectly aligned to get the GIDP on that scorching smash up the middle off of Soto’s bat.
Read a great biography on Gehrig a couple of years ago. Really good stuff. He always thought he would eventually beat ALS, but alas it was too much.
Really like those class Mets uni’s. Glad they ditched the black uniforms. The classic blue and orange dedicated to the Dodgers and Giants, with the simple but clean look and pinstripes is sharp.
Gorman takes two pitches center cut, although he was off balance on the second one expecting something with some zip and it was off speed. But he could have made good contact on either one, especially the first one. Then Ks on a pitch up out of the zone where you never can catch up to. Poor AB.
I agree, Bikemike. The uniform they’re wearing tonight is the one that instantly identifies them as Redbird enemy #1…Haha!
Well, the Cubs are actually enemy #1. We had the rivalry with these guys for a few years in the ‘80s, but other than that they are just another club.
Edit – Oh, and the ‘06 NLCS – Waino freezing Beltran with that curve ball is a memory we all have etched in our minds.

Bike, His RBI totals were hard to fathom, and the year he had 170 some, the Babe had 160!
And the Mets take the opener of this four game series by the score of 4-1.

I’ve always looked upon the Cubs as nothing more than a harmless nuisance, Bikemike. They never really bothered me too much at all and I just never felt like they were a legitimate threat. The Mets were another story. I considered them to be profoundly sinister and dastardly…The very essence of depravity. Did I mention that I genuinely despised the NY Mets?
Edit; And yeah, Wainwright’s epic K of Beltran to seal the ’06 NLCS in game 7 was legitimate proof that good will always triumph over evil…Haha!
