Yes se need another lefty. We have Romero and his 5 innings of work. That is it.

stlcard25ParticipantDeluzio seems to be one of them.
Outfielder Ben Deluzio is being called up by the St. Louis Cardinals, source said. Deluzio was hitting .278/.353/.429 with a .782 OPS and 30 stolen bases in Triple-A this season.

Zack Thompson is on the team still.

ParticipantThat’s a good addition with our speed issues in a couple cases – DeLuzio.

There are at least six 40-man relievers who could be shuttled through during the final month – Naile, Naughton, Cabrera, Whitley, Fernandez and Pacheco. Plus Liberatore if long relief is needed. Also when Matz is ready, someone will have to go.
Wouldn’t they have to wait for both Naughton and Cabrera? Same with Yepez I believe.
Naile looks like the guy to me.
September 1, 2022 at 12:10 pm #198633Yes. My statement was not about 9/1 specifically but about those eligible during the course of the final month.
In my view, some people get too focused on the initial two additions when in reality, roster shuffling could continue through the month.
However, the returns of Flaherty and Matz may put the brakes on much of that.
September 1, 2022 at 12:11 pm #198634Happy for DeLuzio but surprised. Wonder what Yepez is thinkjng? Or Hurst who hás been the hottest OF in Memphis the last 2 months. (Yes, hotter than Gomez, Burlson, or DeLuzio.)
September 1, 2022 at 2:05 pm #198640Interesting. I assume with Pujols play and Yepez limit defensively they found the need for another CF more important than another RH 1B/DH. There is a 40 man spot open for him, but I had assumed it would be used for Flaherty to come off the 60 man IL another move will be needed to activate him when the time comes.
September 1, 2022 at 2:15 pm #198641Sometimes things happen that aren’t justified by the stat sheets.
For example, last 9/1, Brandon Dickson was promoted (for a week).
Also, this spring, Trent Baker was in big league camp.

ParticipantI thought Yepez couldn’t come up until the 6th?

September 1, 2022 at 5:01 pm #198647We have recalled RHP James Naile and selected OF Ben DeLuzio from Memphis (AAA).

September 1, 2022 at 6:33 pm #198654I don’t know if DeLuzio is any good, but that is a great name for a baseball player.
September 2, 2022 at 7:17 pm #198722Those were the days, likely never to return…
Late-season call-ups can add a big boost. J.D. Drew, Chris Duncan and Adron Chambers are among the #STLCards with Septembers to remember.

September 3, 2022 at 10:09 am #198841Will the move to clear a 40-man roster space for Flaherty be moving Walsh to the 60-day DL? Hasn’t pitched since June.
I wondered whether the position player callup would be primarily to pinch run/play CF late if Carlson isn’t available. So long as Nootbar and Pujols are hitting, I don’t see how much action Yepez would see. But I figured it would be Capel. DeLuzio has the stolen base lead, so maybe the best base runner? Anyone have a sense of how the compare defensively?
September 3, 2022 at 12:03 pm #198847Though often proposed I dont think the Cards have ever called up a minor leaguer Just tô place them on the 60 day DL. Very rarely happens by any team.
Cards have several options. They can try tô sneak Robertson or Naughten through waivers só they can outright them tô Memphis More likely they DFA Capel since he is probably gone from the 40 man roster at the end of the year anyway. No use outrighting him tô Memphis as he would become a minor league FA at the end of the year anyway.
September 4, 2022 at 3:26 am #198972Seems like there will be mixing and matching for the rest of Memphis’ season. A dfa of Deluzio, Capel, or Robertson seem possible. And moving Walsh to the 60 day dl seems To be what transaction needs to happen to add Flaherty.
